I remember Bret being the catalyst for the bad times that a company has.
While he was ascending in the WWF, that company was losing money and viewers even though they had the most history. Then when he went to WCW, the bad luck followed him there as they went from first to worst.
I am not suggesting that it was Bret Hart's doing, but the perception can be made that Bret was not the draw that the business made him out to be. No I do think that Bret was the last of the great all around wrestlers because he had the technical background and charisma to match, which is hard to find these days. Mostly I think that the creative staffs of both companies failed Bret, but still when I think of Bret Hart I have to include this.

It's not really what I remember most about Bret, it's what I don't remember that always catches my mind. Bret was screwed out of several matches he so richly deserved. Bret's first world title reign was premature. He had not yet reached his full status. The plan was for Summer Slam '93 for Hart to defeat Hulk Hogan for the World Title and so Hogan would pass the torch. Hart deserved that match, but Hogan had too much backstage power.
WrestleMania XIII, was another match Bret was screwed out of. The plan, from a year prior was for Hart to recapture the title from Shawn Michaels. Hart gave Shawn the title the previous year, so I see it fitting for Michaels to have done the same. But he didn't due to a pussy knee injury (Michaels possibly faked it).
I too have noticed when Hart jumped ship to WCW the "bad luck" followed. Part of that is, actually, thanks to Bret. The Survivor Series screwjob gave McMahon (Or Vince Russo) the idea for screwing over the fan favorite and making the boss the heel. So basically McMahon just had to be himself on camera, just screw over Austin instead of Bret.
Hulk Hogan's initial match in WCW was for the World Championship against Ric Flair. Well, they gave the same deal to Bret, just no World Title. He should have been given the same chance. But due to NWO popularity, and Sting's dark hero status, Hart was dropped to a B card wrestler. Again, Hart was screwed out of his match against Hogan. He even publicly announced it.
His best match though, would be his tribute to Owen match with Chris Benoit. Seeing the two best technical wrestlers go at it was a treat in itself. That match also, I think, elevated Benoit to main event status.
The one last thing I remember about Bret was being the new leader of the NWO. Oh Vince Russo was doing so well when he was running the show. But due to Hart's injury and Bill Bush disagreeing with Russo's choice to make Tank Abbot World Champion, Kevin Sullivan, inevitably lead to WCW's demise.
But Bret, in my mind, will always be the best.

my favorite memory of bret was bret vs hbk iron man match...it lasted 63 minutes and ended with a boy hood dream coming true...bret gave hbk the push that he needed and i respected him for doing that even tho both have had there moments against eachother but it just sucked the way bret got screwed after he helped shawn get that push....my favorite memory in wcw was him and sting....they had great matches that was either won with the sharpshooter or a no contest....

I think it would be his awesome technical/mat skills, with as little showboating as possible. What a showman.
I also have to add that I esp. liked his submission match with SCSA at WM13 in 1997. Watch it if you can!! Great!!
