Here you are using conversion factor. They are very fun once you get the hang of it, you can do any conversions u like as long as all your units cancel out and only the desired unit remains. Here is the trick that always works.
- You want to know 1ft = ?cm
- you already know that: 1m = 100cm and 1ft = 0.3048m
Here is the conversion factor:
?cm = 1ft (0.3048m/ 1ft)(100cm/1m)
= 30.48cm
therefore 1ft = 30.48 cm, note that there were two fts that canceld out and two m's that canceled out, but the cm remained.
Here is another exampl:
you want to know how many cm there are in 2 ft?
?cm = 2ft (0.3048m/ 1ft)(100cm/1m)
= 60.96cm
therefore 2ft = 60.96cm.
