What is the niche of the orangutan? Do they have a specific role in the environment, or is their purpose to eat and reproduce?

Ummm...my biology homework! lol. We're doing a project on endangered animals, and I chose the orangutans. They're fascinating, but the only thing I didn't get was their purpose.

As a biologist I prefer it when people do not use the word purpose to describe a niche. However, to answer you question they are solitary fruit eaters that spread several varieties of fruit seeds on the island of Borneo. You will have to check into which fruit trees are spread that way as I do not know the specific ones.

What do you mean by "purpose"? No animal has a purpose. They all evolved to fill and exploit a niche. Orangoutans are brachiating tree dwellers that eat fruit. They live in Indonesia.

That is a REALLY good question. I'm sure there are some species of SOMETHING that they assist in living, even if they are hosts to parasites...

You're brilliant. Where did you get this question?!
