Okay im getting my friend a fish for kris kringle and i am not sure wheather you can leave them in the bag that they come in for about 3 hours or wheather you have to transfer them into a tank or bowl very soon. I know that you have to put the bag in the tank/bowl for 15mins to get the temp correct but does the water in the bowl have to be a certain temperature and if so what and how do i get it to that temperature???

You should set up your new fish tank 24 hours before you put the fish in, to let the water come to room temperature and let the water aerate. Be sure to have a tank with a filter system. Then there should be no need to have the fish sit in its bag for several hours.

Whether it will be okay may depend on where you keep it during the three hours and what kind of conditions there are where you're at. If you live in the north, I wouldn't leave it for three hours in an unheated car in the parking lot if it's 30o outside.

Rather than bringing the fish to give your friend, why not get (or make) a card with a picture of a fish, and put a "coupon" inside that says "Good for One Fish" and put a day and time you can go with your friend to pick one out and take it straight to her house?

Also, be sure she has a tank set up and that the fish is something she wants (and would get along with other fish she has).

Simply tell the person where you are buying the fish that it will be 3 to 5 hours before the fish can get out of the bag and they will use a larger bag with more air in it.

They should be okay in the bag for three hours. There is a certain temp the tank should be but it depends on which fish you got. To get to a temp you need a heater.

If this is a fish then I would suggest handing it to them in person at a good time not wrapping christmas wrapping around the fish.
