Whose trial? Question's too vague.

Edit:
The "Scopes Trial" (Scopes v. State, 152 Tenn. 424, 278 S.W. 57 (Tenn. 1925).
Commonly called the "Scopes Monkey Trial").

Biology teacher John Scopes was put to trial because he violated Tennessee's anti evolution law, the Butler Act. The act prohibited teachers from the state to teach any theory if it specifically opposed divine creation.

So Scopes got in trouble for teaching theory of Evolution, a theory that claimed that humans descended from a lower group of animals, in this case "monkeys." Keep in mind this happened in the South from a bible belt state, where evolution was unpopular and Christian evangelicalism dictate the norm of life.
