what ways are there to restrict the power on a kx 65? I have brought my son a kx 65 for christmas and was wondering if there was any way to restrict the power as he is only used to ridng a honda qr 50 and its a bit of a step up,im sure he will get on fine with it but for the first month i would like to restrict it just for safety.

thank you for our answers in advance

Seriously, dad, it's not that much of a step up. Yeah it may knock him back by surprise the first time he turns the throttle, but give him an afternoon with it and he'll be just fine.

If you feel that you MUST put a power restriction on it, and you want to do it right, you can construct a restrictor plate out of thin sheet aluminum and place it between the carburetor and engine intake. Or it may be easier to play with the mixture and get it running rich on the idle circuit--though that's fraught with danger. But it will be much safer in the long run if you let him have all 15 extra CCs at once. It's not like you're giving him a 250.

Unscrew the top of the carburetor.
Remove the cable from the slide.
Thread the cable through some nuts (as in nuts & bolts).
The more you use, the more restrictive the speed will be.
Cable goes through the carb top - then the nuts - then attaches to the slide.
Re-install the cable on the slide (don't forget the spring) and put the top back on the carb.
The nuts will prevent the throttle slide from lifting all the way.
As your kid gets more accustomed to the bike, remove a nut.
If he misbehaves, or doesn't do his homework, put the nuts back in LOL

you can use the fuel/air mixture screw to run it rich, or use some nuts and put then on the throttle cable to stop the slides opening all the way up. he should be fine 15 more cc wont make much of a difference.

I would not even restrict it, The time that you would take to do that after a couple of hours he would be ready for you to remove the restiction..... Make sure he has his safety gear on and let him go, He will be fine.
