Oh man, I'm too sensitive or something... The news sucks. I just watched it and these people got a blanket from a church in San Francisco and they were SO grateful. And I complain when the water in the shower takes too long to heat up. Arg... what's wrong with me?

I don't understand why there are still people that are freezing to death on the streets in this day and age. Can someone explain this to me?

Now I'm crying.

Well don't feel to bad, Most of those people put themselves in that situation by making the wrong choice or choices at some point in their lives. Some of them are felons who found it hard to get a job and even a place to live. Most places wont hire felons and apartments don't rent to them (i worked in property mgmt 4 over five years and none of my properties accept them). So they just give up and end up on the street. Others have substance abuse problems, they cant hold a job and would rather be high than anything else. Some have mental health issues who never looked for help or don't know how to seek it or they were abandoned by relatives who didn't want to deal with them. Some are just runaways who never came back. Either way, the majority have choice and free will to do as they wish like beg for spare $$ and a blanket or beg for a job. Oh and day labor offices exist all over the USA and they have a need for laborers who are willing to work, all you need is a name and a valid SS# (something every American has). Remember that we all have the right to chose to do something or nothing. Its great to be Pro-choice!!
Life throws you some hard blows. Deal with it and move on.

Well sometimes we forget about how good we have it. There was a point earlier this year that I was very close to living in my car because I didn't have any where else to go. I was laying in my warm bed the other night when that hit me. I never had to sleep in my car. And then it hit me that alot of people don't even have a car to sleep in. I hope that a lot of people see your question and remember that at this time of year when it is coldest and it supposed to be the season of giving that we could forget for a moment about standing in line to get that Wii or grumbling about how much presents cost. Maybe people will stop and think about those less fortunate-not just the homeless but the needy and elderly as well. Donate some food, clothes, Christmas gifts, or even just your time. I will be buying no Christmas gifts for my family or friends this year, but I will be buying toys for needy children, donating money and food to the food bank, and donating my old jackets and coats to the programs that clothe the needy. I have never done this before or felt compelled to do this until this year when I came close to having nothing....Happy Holidays and God Bless!

because not enough people help.....we're all too busy worrying about our own problems.....that really are so small compared to others..

We have the same problem in the UK and now the a local London council wanst to put a stop to the soup kitchens that volunteers run for the homeless. Talk about putting people down when they can't go any lower.

It's about time our governments looked after the homeless instead of thinking about spending billions on a building or a stupid bomb.

While I do admit America can neglect it's own people in the worst way....sometimes these people choose to be homeless. Doesn't mean that they won't be greatful for a blanket though. I had friends who chose to be homless, while they were in their 20's. They wanted to ride the trains, sleep under the stars and experience life (more power to ya I guess). So it's not always about not giving to them. Mental illness can make people do odd odd things too.

I choose to work in a job that doesn't pay alot (thank god for hubby's job!) but that doesn't obligate my neighbors to come help me out if I am running short for grocery money that week.

Some are there bad sad misfortune, some are there by choice and some are there because they are not capapble of mentally being anywhere else, atleast not in their minds.

hey some have hit hard times, and only need a small bit of help...but others get what they deserve, I mean some of them are plain lazy,

I see people begging for money, yet there is a help wanted sign in the business right behind them...

yet others have mental health problems that need tending to,

I was having finacila problems in 02..about 1 month from being out onthe street myself...I was bitter about a job that fell thru and did nothing for about 5 months...then I snapped to ,and have worked my way to owning a home, and 5 cars...I will hopefully buy a 2nd home in 08....this is possible for any of these homeless maybe not quite as far as I came but to become a part of society is in their grasp...I started by taking the crappiest job in my life, an exterminator..I hated it but it got me on my feet, took some classes..and moved on.

why cant the homeless do the same

I dont get it either. We support our local humane society, but not our homeless shelters. Its disgusting. So what are you going to do now? Dry your tears and take a hot shower? I hope not, I hope youre bothered enough to ACT! Volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen, organize a food drive, donate a Mc Donalds gift card...Dont be fooled-very few people actually CHOOSE homelessness. You cant put all of the responsibility on the wealthy, you've witnessed what they never will and now it is up to you do something. Even if we werent at war the gov't would not shelter the homeless.

Its because there are so many people that walk that line everyday, just making enough to barely survive. Then they raise the gas prices so everything else goes up. The only thing that never goes up is the wages and job security. None of us rich or poor are immune to it. Great question and its good to see people wasking these questions to bad nobody will ever do anything about it

I was told the other day your life is what you make of it.
That is how others look at it.
They cozed there own undoing.
It is there fault there neighbor was cocking myth on the gas stove and burnt down the apartment complex.
It was there undoing the company they worked for down seized be cos of government budget cuts and they lost there job and home.
Do to a mine cave in they lost there job as a miner.

The American dream = step over everyone else to get to the top

The more money you have the more important you are, and conversely so as well...

The world is a tough place if you look close enough, that is why you have to treat any kindness you observe as the wonderful thing it is
