Neither, a maximum jail sentence can be life plus "x" number of years added to that. While 364, or 280 or 14 days could be a maximum sentence for certain offenses, it is determined by the law for the offense, and not a "one size fits all" situation.

In Pennsylvania, a person can be sent to jail for 2 years less 1 day and the local county still retains control over parole. However, a person can be sentenced up to 5 years in jail, but the state has control over parole decisions.

the maximum jail sentence can be life without parole. It can also be consecutive life sentences. It depends on how serious the offense, how many times this offence was committed, how many charges are brought against the offender, how many guilty findings are brought.

365 days is just 1 year. compared to some sentences passed, that is very little time.

Are you talking federal? Then the sentence can extend for longer than the average lifetime. The are inmates doing over 150 years, granted they wont live that long but still it is longer than tha for federal. If you are talking state though it depends on the state and the County.
