The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

these are all great answers that you got and I think I will try and read some of them myself.
But may I suggest "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon
She has a series of 6 books starting with Outlander. They will make you cry and laugh and you won't be able to put it down after the first 50-60 pages and you will run right out to the library and/or bookstore to get the others in the series because you will just HAVE to know what happens to these characters that you have fallen in love with. They live, love, laugh, cry, raise children, and grow old together and also grow as characters. It is an adventurous, sexy, romantic, historical novel and I have read it 12-15 times and each time I find something new because with each re-read, even though I know what is going to happen, I can't wait to get to those parts of the book and I miss things. You will have to re-read it again because you will do the same.
good luck and happy reading (if we ever hear from you again because you won't be able to come up for air to do anything else once you start reading it)
and then you will want to discuss it with other like minded Gabaldon lovers and there is a website where we do just that:

You didn't say what kind of books you like to read. Here are the books I have read recently: The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks. Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs. Her books are a series of books with the same leading woman character. It is a mystery. Dead Watch by John Sandford. The Loop by Nicholas Evans. And The Book of the Dead by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. Riding The Bus With My Sister, by Rachel Simon was a very touching book to read. It is a true story. I am now reading the biography of Benjamin Franklin. It was written by H.W. Brands. The title is The First American, The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin.

Myst: The Book of Ti'ana, by Rand Miller,David Wingrove, others. Based on the computer game, popular in the early 90s. There are two other books, and I heard there may be a fourth.
If you like mysteries, you may enjoy Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels or Les Roberts' books, particulary his Milan Jakovich books.
The Looking Glass Wars, by Frank Beddor. This gives an interesting and dark twist to the Alice in Wonderland story.
The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova. This is good if you like vampire tales.
If you like historical fiction, or books set in the Victorian era, I recommend Eleanor Updale's Montmorency series. In the first book, Montmorency is a petty thief who is nearly killed in an accident. He is saved by an up-and-coming doctor. While healing from his injuries and cooling his heals in prison, Montmorency hatches a plot to commit greater crimes using London's new sewer systems. There are four books so far.
Haunted Mesa, by Louis L'Amour. An interesting tale that combines the mystery and legends of the Anasazi into a story that's almost science fiction.
The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson. This story is so bizarre it reads like fiction, but it's true. It relates the events surrounding the 1893 World Fair, from the views of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor.
Orson Scott Card has written many good fantasy and science fiction novels. I particularly like his Alvin Maker series, his first two Ender series books and his Shadow series.
Terry Brooks is another good fantasy writer. I particularly like his Kingdom of Landover novels (the first three, that is -- the later two are mediocre). I also liked most of his Shannarah books, particularly The Scions of Shannarah.

Go to Amazon.com and search
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1" - book 2 is coming out in the next month or two, and 3 is already written and in editing.
"Death by Murder David Lindsay" - you have to search that way for it to come up. There's a lot of sex and violence in it but it's good, not gratuitous.
and "Super Spaghetti."
They're free on Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, and you can Google how to get a free trial of that. And you can get a free Kindle app for your phone or just read them online.

These are some of the best books that I have ever read. I'll start you off with a short one, and then WHEN you find out that I have impeccable taste, , please continue down the list.
'Nine Princes in Amber' by Roger Zelazny ****
'Ender's Game by 'Orson Scott Card' *****
'Dragon Flight' by Anne McCaffrey *****
'Sword of Shannara' by Terry Brooks (Not the best of the series, but once you get started on the series, you'll get hooked.) ***
'Ender's Shadow by 'Orson Scott Card' *****
'Foundation' by Isaac Asimov (Deep, but excellent!) *****
(The best in pure science fiction)
'The Final Reflection' by John M. Ford (Don't underestimate this book!!! It's a Star Trek Novel, but it shouldn't be designated as such. Very deep book with many layers. One of the best books ever written, but because it says 'Star Trek', it doesn't get the circulation it deserves.)
Happy reading!
