A tsunami is a wave that is created by an earthquake under the ocean. A vertical slip sets up the wave which travels through the full depth of the ocean. As the ocean shallows at the coast, the wave is compressed and forces the water to rise to create the devastating wave that rushes onto the shore.
A storm surge is created by the very high winds in hurricanes/typhoons/tropical cyclones. There is a rise in sea level caused by the winds but this is only at surface level. It is not through the full depth of the ocean like a tsunami. A storm surge arriving on a high tide can raise sea levels by two metres or so above the high tide.

a tsunami is any kind of water displaced in the ocean like an earthquake or a rock slide into the water and spreads out over a large area very quickly. storm surge has to do with high winds going around an area of low pressure. like a hurricane strong winds push the water up into a bulge that will flood the land when the hurricane makes landfall the pressure of the storm won't have an effect on the storm surge. the water can reach heights of 30 feet.

A storm surge is an offshore rise of water associated with a low pressure weather system typically a tropical cyclone;caused by primarily high winds pushing on the ocean's surface. So,wind velocity is the main cause for storm surge,Low pressure at the centre of a weather system is a minor contributory factor.
This is dangerous if it occurs at the time of high tide as the effects of both add together.
Tsunami is caused by the earthquake that occurs below the bottom of oceans.Tsunami waves travel unnoticed for thousands of kms and emerges suddenly at the sea shores to cause extensive damage. These waves move out in all directions from the point of origin unlike the storm surge which occurs only along the storm path.

A tsunami is a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine landslide, or other disturbances. A tidal wave is an exceptionally large ocean wave, especially one caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. In a way the two are different , but tidal waves are found in tsunamis. Also tidal wave is actually a nontechnical term for a tsunami
