The big trend is the wealthy getting more wealth and the average person struggling more to get by and living in a sterilized and harsh environment.
Conservatives are trying to privatize which saves money. However, this is very bad for the average American because services are reduced and people are forced to work longer hours to maintain a decent standard of living. Freedom of speech through media is limited. Human rights, privacy, and the right to pursue happiness have been reduced substantially. A police state is becoming established, but the safety of people is reduced (unless you have the money to buy into a gated community).
Essentially, the lords are getting more powerful and exert control over the day-to-day lives of the less established people. The life of an average person looks a lot like a slave with the control of finances and the steady stream of media reporting that is blatant propaganda under the influence of corporate interests.
Corporations and other institutions are getting smart about how to maximize their profits at the expense of everyday people. Christians are being expoited through their leaders to support a conservative plan, which in the long-term will undercut their well-being.
Most Democrats and Republicans have sold out to powerful interests. They differentiate themselves through social issues, but the most important transitions will not happen. Political campaigns give lip service to social reform, but they will fail to deal with real changes that could benefit the most needy. Example: Universal health coverages as implemented in France.
The American government has imprisoned people indefinitely without due process and systematically use torture with very little justification or benefit. Slowly, our society in the city streets of America is transforming into a police state.
Most of the following issues will remain in status quo, because these issues are benefiting the elite:
Death penalty - Example of a cruel and barbaric reactionary government. It will continue although it is baned in civilized countries.
Abortion - Polarizing issue gets conservatives to the polls. It will be a big issue and tool.
Gay Marriage - Polarizing issue... It will remain unresolved because it gets the conservative vote out.
Drugs - Drugs that do not give profits to major drug manufacturers or the CIA drug trafficers will be fought and this will remain in a status quo.

I predict more & more poverty & deprivation & civil unrest.
More & more unneccesary gun deaths & crime spiralling out of control. There needs to be radical changes to the way crime is dealt with.
The death penalty should be made to mean just that instead of meaning these prisoners sit in prisons for 20 years or more, knowing each day could be the day their execution date is decided. That is tantamount to torture or, at the very least, mental cruelty. Once the prisoner is sentenced they should have a month to say their goodbyes, make their appeals etc. & then the sentence should be carried out. This would also cut down on overcrowding in prisons.
Drug crime should be dealt with swiftly & severely. Death penalty for dealers because they cause the deaths of so many others.
A reform of the Health system is also long overdue. How terrible that a person can be allowed to die just because they have no insurance to pay for an operation!
Abortion should remain a woman's right to choose but the legal limit for weeks should be reduced to 16, no more.
Maybe America needs either a female or a black President so that issues affecting every section of society can be dealt with for a change.

I see America eventually collapsing or having a revolution (this happens to almost all countries and civilizations throughout history, why should the US be an exception?).
I see Bush going and a Democrat being elected. I think there is next to no hope of a Republican being elected as President next time because of everything Bush has done.
