I was born in Europe and I lived in Europe 16 years.
I recommend you to go to the:
France: Nice - with very beautiful sand beach and city with hot weather and good place where to relax. Paris - EIFFEL TOWER, shopping and many famous museums and monuments . Marseille - many famous monuments and museums and beautiful beach.
Italy: Milan(shopping), Rome - The Colosseum and Vatican City, Tuscany - Famous Pisa Tower.
German: Bayern - With beautiful mountains and castles. Munich - Take a tour in BMW museum! Berlin - The Brandenburg Gate
Netherlands - Amsterdam! Get high legally!
Greece - Go visit Olympic and the place where Olympic Games born. Also go and visit Temple of Athena Parthenos.
And also you can go and stop by in Norway and visit the famous fjords.
------------------------
You don't have to go in everywhere in those places, you can just go to the Italy and France, but these are the most beautiful/interesting places where you can go in Europe. Of course If you want something scary and extreme then go to the Moscow and Turkey lol :D.
Transportation: You can drive with light-rail or city bus(don't be afraid. Europe public transport rocks. It's 100% different than US public transportation. Even business businessman's are using it.
Food: Food is almost with the same price in Europe as in US. Maybe a little bit cheaper but it depends. Except in Norway. One cup of coffee costs like 5-10 dollars :/.
Hotels: One night in Hotel In Berlin costs between 50-120 Eur's.
One night in Rome costs 60-100(depends what size of room you want)
One night in Paris costs between 50-100
and You can check other hotel prices from Google.com

The major countries in 2 weeks? NO!!!!
Don't do this. Pick one or two countries and go there. Do some proper research - pipe dreams unexplored remain pipe dreams at best, miserable disasters at worst. You like warm weather and interesting culture? Head to Italy, or any other country in the Mediterranean region. Want a slightly Eastern flavour? Eastern Europe is the place for you. Want slightly mad people who speak a similar language to you? Ireland and England. Wine? France and Italy and Spain. Beer? Germany and the Czech Republic. Recent history (i.e. Communism)? Hungary and Poland.
You get the idea. You only have 2 weeks. Make the most of it, do some research, answer some of your own basic questions, figure out what it is you want to do and see, and start investigating properly. Then come back here with some real questions.

book everything wile still in the usa, including your railway pass from country to country- it's much cheaper that way. also, pack lightly- it saves time and money when you dont have to lug a lot of baggage around with you, plus you'll have roomin your suitcase for souveneers. also you shold probably bring travelers checks (refundable/insured),atm/creditcard, and cash, andhide them in an easaly accessable, very safe spot on your body- like a fanny pack. (if you dont think is cool looking then get the kind that is flat looking and can be easaly hidden under even tight clothing. then dont take the pack off. best to separate the money just in case one stash of $$ or checks etc get lost stolen mugged.... keep your pasport/visa in the pack on your body too. protecting sutch documents will save you hundreds ob euroes or $$$. an itinerary will definetly help as well.
I think you'd have to spend a lot more than two weeks in europe to see all of the "major countries" but if your going to spend two weeks and no more, I suggest seeing the capitals in two or three countries, since they often incorporate a great deal of the countries spectacles and intrigues in an easaly accesable layout for the time starved traveler.
I recomend seeing at least one castle wile your out there, in any country, if youve got a famous historic hero youd like to track, europe is one of the most fun places to walk in the footsteps of one of them, also check out the springs, many european countries have famous ones ,weather it's Bath, in england (one of the romans baths), or the springs from wich perrier is bottled- in france, some famous springs are still available for a quick dip today.
have fun on your trip!

visit www.gapyear.com. Lots of people doing the same thing.
You can actually do it on a pretty small budget if you're willing to stay in hostels (4 to a room, but almost totally safe. SO many people use them because they are like £14 a night rather than £60 a night for a hotel.
Seriously check out that site
