It is a hard question to know when someone is responsible for their behavior and when not. There's no black and white answer- obviously some people who do the wrong thing just made a poor choice and are fully responsible, and there are others who are so obviously mentally ill, and so obviously turned away from any help for their problems, that they should not be held responsible. The problem is all the people in between.

As a first step, anyone with a moderate to severe mental illness should have access to very good medical help. but 1/2 of those with severe mental illnesses do not know that they are sick, so what will we do about those people? Force them to take meds? That is done in some cases, but the drugs can be toxic (cause heart attack or liver or kidney failure), and they can make you gain 60 lbs in a few months, and all kinds of other severe side effects - is it moral to force them on people? Especially given that they don't help everyone, and others they only help a little bit?

If the answer was obvious, it would be solved already. I think the real issue here is no one wants to pay taxes to help out a mentally ill person, because the general public wants us to just go away (I have severe bipolar, but have not got in trouble with the law fortunately.. I would say I am only partially responsible for most of my negative behaviors - I really can't control them better).

Mentally ill? Or Insane? I don't know that we lock up mentally ill people who are capable of reasoning? I'm sure a few slip through the cracks. When someone is criminalized, it's probably because they've committed a criminal act. If someone rapes or kills someone and claims they are mentally ill should we say O.K. go home then. You couldn't help yourself? Or if someone is manic depressive or anti-social and is caught shop lifting, does that give them a get out of jail free card? Bi-polar and you're entitled to 2 car jackings and one bank robbery before you get locked up? Thats why we lock uo the mentally ill. Being mentally ill doesn't necessarily mean you don't know the difference between right and wrong. And by the way, many mentally ill people get away with many crimes before they actually get locked up. Check out prop 36. Claim youre a drug addict and youre home free. Felonies included.

i'm sorry you have been accosted. this is why issues are the way they're. Years in the past Geraldo Rivera did an reveal on a psychological enterprise. the situation replaced into disgraceful to declare the least. besides the undeniable fact that, the nicely meaning yet regrettably defective liberals used it as a focal factor to attack the full institutionalization gadget. the effect replaced into that many have been in simple terms closed down and the sufferers dumped on the line. In that era many regulations have been written proceeding to guard the sufferers' rights yet they made it just about impossible to institutionalize somebody devoid of their consent. So, this brings us to the place we come across ourselves right this moment. .

People are really cruel with the mentally ill They bash on them spit and run away from them like they were the worst beast on earth Yes they put them in jail because its cheaper for the government than having a hospital who is specialized in treatment of the mentally ill For the one who says they are not jail EH ;Wait a minute What about Andrea Yates She should had never be jailed for a minute but she was Its so sad to see someone who is mentally ill how come people can be so hard and cruel . Its a proof that human race is driven by their animal instinct

We are all responsible for what happens if our moods get out of control & we break the law! Why do we lock them up? We do that when their problems become habitual & cause problems for the law abiding citizens that are endangered by them. If you turn mean every day then I would suggest that you see a professional & figure out just what the cause of your anger is. Life goes by really fast & it's a shame to waste so much precious time being angry & unhappy Best of luck to you.

Um no. It's not criminalized actually.

The only reason people are "locked up" is if they are proven to be a danger to themselves or others.
