I assume you don't have kids - if you have kids you need an attorney to ensure their rights and yours are protected. If you have significant assets and debts from the marriage that's important too. But the cheapest way to do it is get a do it yourself package online or even better, if they have them at your county court house. Fill it out and then pay an attorney $500 or so to review it on your behalf. Then file it. You may need to do a couple of filings if there is a waiting period, but the peope at the courthouse should be able to help you with that.

A lot of counties have legal aid that is available to people in the community. They can often give free legal advise. You can file through the court system on your own and pay the filing fee (around $40). Of course, if he turns around and hires an attorney , you may get screwed! Most attorneys will do a free consultation. It may benefit you to talk with one (or two, or three) and get their advice. They may be willing to help you with the paperwork, without representing you in court, for a lower fee.

Well, it's quite possible that your husband would be the one who has to pay all attorney fees, particularly if there is a huge discrepancy in your income vs his (and this sounds like the case). The yellow pages in the phone book often lists several attorneys that provide "free consultation". Why don't you see if you can find one.

If you don't have the money to file, how are you planning to live on your own?
Anyway, it seems to me that separating accomplishes the major part of what you want, and is free.
