Most of you are probably too young to ponder on these things, but do you ever wonder, whether you are just plainly wasting your life away, or is it all right not to strive and make a significant mark in the world....

Thanks Charity... needed to be said... I too pondered and "thought" when I was very young, but never on "whether I missed the boat"....

I'm currently 41 yrs old. I am at a point in life where I feel I have enough perspective to provide a fairly credible answer.

1. Wasting my life away:
Personally, a waste of my life would preclude much of my philosophy on life and debase my efforts to this point. I am not a rich man by material standards. Many of my family and friends comment that I could be much more than I am at present. I have considered this over some years and I have come to a point of resolution as far as that is concerned.

I really don't care what they think.
I have the best perspective on my personal success. And in my assessment of my life I can say that as long as I feel good about the person that I am, the virtue that I attempt to emulate, and the strength of my convictions, I am just fine.

2. Is it ok not to strive...
Perspective is a horribly wonderful thing. It can be the most useful yet deadly commodity a person possesses. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to realize that your goals are yours. They cannot be quantified nor judged by anyone else. As long as you are satisfied that you are attempting to better yourself in a way that satiates your goals for life, then you are in a good place.

Well us younger folk do actually think. Quite the concept, I'm sure.

The people who seem to make significant marks in this world are the politicians with rather active sexual lives or the celebrities with gerbils. Or a president who enjoys killing young soldiers to do... what??

Please tell me why young people do not strive to make a mark on this world?

It is a double edged sword, because most people who strive to make a significant mark on the world do far more harm to it through their efforts.

Striving and making a significant mark certainly doesn't prove that you are making a "better" mark than someone who incidentally makes a significant mark. I am pretty sure Hitler was striving to make a mark. In this case, it might have been "better" if he hadn't made a mark at all.

A friend of mine was married to a prominent Psychiatrist, and they got into one of those "What are we here for?" conversations.

This was his answer: "You don't have to do anything great in this world to be a successful person -- just don't make things any worse than they are."

I think that both true and hopeful. Living an ordinary life well -- holding a job and doing it well, raising a family, and being a good citizen is enough of an accomplishment.

If it so happens that life puts you into some situation where you can do something spectacular, well, go for it. But that's not necessary to be a good person living a good life -- and to be honored for it.

More soul coherency and inner sensibility is a significant way to "make a mark," as one's development is key to contributing to community.

"Man, Master of His Destiny," Aivanhov,
"Climb the Highest Mountain," Mark Prophet,
"Men in White Apparel," Ann Ree Colton, and
"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck,
are worthwhile re this question.

Well you should try to make a significant mark "One random act of kindness at a time". Going for great significant feats for the sake of great significant feats is merely pride talking, and going towards such a feat won't make your life much more meaningful.

I like your question.

Life is a series of hurdles & of continues endless struggle. I am in my mid twenties married & planning to have kinds. My mark will be educating them (I am my self an Engineer) and support shaping them into functional people.
And yes also if I at least help one student supporting him/her in studies as much as I can.
