This is to Cinner, who obviously is an ignorant, opinionated doink who doesn't bother to research facts before putting foot in mouth.
I live in New Orleans. Do you want to know why things are so bad? I'll tell you why! The government is responsible for the levees because of the 1970's Navigable Waterways acts. For 30 years they funded the construction of inadequate levees. If WE tried to build a levee, we were stopped because that was federal jurisdiction. So what failed that hit the city so hard? Levees.
Then, if you look at money awarded, the number of homes affected in south Louisiana was over 200,000 while the homes affected in Mississippi was less than 40,000. BUT our neighbors in Mississippi got MORE MONEY than we did for relief and rebuilding. Why? POLITICS. They had a republican governor. We had a democrat who was critical of the Bush administration for dragging its feet.
Just so you'll understand that I'm not a knee-jerk reactionary, I would also prefer that the trailers be taken away, too. But NOT until the people living in them have a chance to rebuild. And the business-friendly republican governent is allowing the insurance companies to pay out pennies on the dollar value on damage claims, to the point of having to take the lousy blood-suckers to court to cough up the money.
In the years 2005 and 2006, the insurance industry made record profits even though it was the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters in USA history. THAT should speak volumes.
So, do you want to know why we get upset? Because no one will believe the extent of the damage. Five days a week I drive past a spot where one of the levees failed. I see the houses that two years later are still unable to be demolished or repaired because it costs MONEY to do that and nobody is accepting responsibility. Not Congress, not FEMA, not the insurance companies, ... nobody. And without that money, the displaced people have no place to live.

Listen "The doc" Mississippi suffered a lot of damges!!! Over 2.9 Million people were displaced/homes destroyed 236 people died, 67 missing, and an estimated $125 billion in damages, the reason that new orleans in particular suffered so much was because the levees broke and guess what...the city of new orleans was warned over a year in advance that the leeves would break! beacause a storm catagory 3 was supposed to hit instead went to florida...they knew a catagory 3 would make the leeves unstable they had a year even more but what did they do...ignore it they didn't even try. and another thing about mississippi they did not get more money because of the republican governor they got it because they had a lot a damage and our govorner knows how to respond he was ready he declared a state of emergency...we can't say the same for governor blanco who declared a state of emergency to late! And all though i don't like bush or how he handled the situation it is not all his fault he can't control mother nature...I do however believe that since 2 years and 3 months exactly since katrina hit and there are still people in FEMA trailors? How long are people going to live in our government homes? then what happens if there is another disaster where are those people gonna live, as for paying someone to tear down houses that is the corps of engineers job and no one pays for it ...yes its bad its the holidays but you have to learn to move on I have and everyone I know has. I am only speaking because I have lost everything in katrina, and decided not to think of the past but move to the future!

I kind of question why New Orleans is being rebuilt in the same spot. They are living in a bowl..... Of course, another great question to be answered would be what happened to all the levy tax funds. Residents have paid a levy tax since god knows when but the levies weren't improved/upgraded. It's kind of tough to blame the federales for incompetant/corrupt local government.

I agree wholeheatedly with you ; it is both a personal disgrace as well as a national disgrace ! Georgie - the boy - bush is a great example on what not to be or do ; this is an outrage against humanity and he should forever be remembered for it !!!!
I hope that the history books recall only this despicable act of this so-called ' good man ' ! !

Would you like some cheese to go with your whine? Please spare us the "Katrina was all Bush's fault" crap. Why don't the "victims" go to their local or state government for help? Why didn't the city of N.O. use the money given to them to fix the problem instead of blowing it on more social programs? Whatever happened to people fixing their problems by working hard and using their brains instead of expecting the government to bail them out, like they have a freaking right to be bailed out.....Geez!!!!
