What a poem should have is emotions. They don't have to hit you over the head. They can be subtle or even disguised...

In my opinion, no. In a good poem, the meaning is so strong and and in depth that it doesn't need to be a hidden meaning.

But again, all poems are different and it is up to the reader to interpret the poem. Only the writer of a particular piece knows the true meaning.

Well pretty much, it doesn't have to be something so that only the really bright people only get, but there always has to be a kind hidden meaning or it won't be a poem...

No they do not "have to have hidden meanings".

There are some that do, just as there are some that do not.

Every poem and poet is different. Some hide, some don't.

Some would-be poets like to think so. They are wrong. A good poem shouldn't need to be explained, it should speak to the reader in plain, easily understood language. Poets who imagine themselves clever or mysterious, use words that have to be looked up in a dictionary. Using this device, the only person they impress is themselves, never the reader.

I think of poetry as a distilled version of language. No hidden meanings, necessarily, but only what is essential; no fluff.
