It amazes me that everyone is making a foregone conclusion that Mussina is dead in the water and that Pettitte will not be back. Pettitte has not made an announcement one way or the other about retiring, and personally, since it appears that the Yanks are now the front runner for Santana, it wouldn't surprise me that he comes back for one more year. I think Pettitte is making his decision entirely on whether or not the Yankees get Santana.
I don't agree with Joba in the starting rotation --- Kennedy makes more sense, so given all the variables, Santana signing in NY and Pettitte coming back, the rotation probably would be something like this:
Santana
Wang
Pettitte
Mussina
Kennedy
So Ellsbury, what does that say about your scenario "do the Yanks even make it to five games?" Dump the hate and show some respect.

This is a big reason why an Andy Pettitte retirement would hurt the Yankees. I'm not a Yankees fan, but if I were I'd be very concerned about having 3/5 of my rotation basically unproven as starters in the big leagues. Hughes has 13 starts in his career with an ERA hovering near 4.50. Is he better than that? Probably, but we don't know. Kennedy has pitched 3 games in the bigs. Nothing can be deduced from that. As for Chamberlain - there's a big difference between pitching one inning every two or three days than pitching 7 innings in one game and facing a lineup at least 3 times. He has electric stuff, but until he actually is a starter we have no idea what to expect.
If I were Brian Cashman I would make it my business to get another veteran starter or two on the roster before April.

They can, whether they trade for Santana or not. I see potential in Kennedy, Hughes, and the Joba man. It could take a year or two, but the Yankees have the potential to have a good pitching staff with the young pitchers they have. I would also like to take the time out to answer a question you asked, that I wasn't able to answer at the time. I do tend to use the word, "we", when talking about the Yankees because I have been a fan for a long time, and I feel like they are a part of me, just like any other Yankee fan.

It looks like Hughes will be gone for Santana; i can;t really argue with it but it is going to hurt trading a 21 year old kid with that kind of talent. When you look at the Yankee pitching staff you have to look at how it stacks up to the red Sox staff; the reason they will have to get Santana (and give up Hughes) is essentially because if not the Sox had the best deal on the table for Santana. Take a look at the potential matchups for a Sox/Yanks series both ways:
Sox: Santana/ Yanks: Wang
Sox: Beckett/ Yanks: Jaba
Sox: Schilling/ Yanks: Hughes
Sox: Matzusaka/ Yanks: Mussina
Obvioulsy if the Yanks were to land Santana the pitching matchups are really in their favor (assuming Andy retires). Now look at it with Santana:
Beckett/Santana
Schilling/Wang
Matzusaka: Jaba
Lester: Mussina/Kennedy
That is much more managable and much more competitive. The Yanks are built to win now (Posada 36, A-Rod/Jeter 32/33, Mo 38, etc). Can you really wait for the pitching to mature when the best pitcher in baseball is there for the taking? You have to sacrifice something to get something and as much as I don't want to see Hughes go it's not like they are trading him for a 3rd line starter; a pitcher like Santana comes along once in a generation so you have to make it happen.

It's worth a shot. The 40-man roster of the Colorado Rockies last season had 26 players on it who were signed and developed within the Rockies' system. And, as I recall, they did get to the World Series. Something which seemed to elude the Yankees. Someone needs to make a desk sign for the owner and the GM of that team: " Remember, Jeeter came up via our farm system!".

If the Red Sox don't get Santana it will be Bucholz, Lester and Okchima and Papelbon in the Bullpen, not to mention Schilling, Beckett and Dice-K.
So Red Sox pitching better then yours 2007 World Series Champions is the reason why we're good.

Don't rule out if the yankees would get Haren from Oakland if the Twins ask for too much.
