nappies and lots of them, and a rocker for the baby to sit in.

Pampers Swaddlers
Pampers Sensitive Wipes
if you're going to choose a swing, choose one that looks really comfy with toys that hang where the baby can see them... maybe something like the Boppy swing or the FischerPrice Papasan... nothing like the Graco Bounce-n-Swing. The chair is a removable bouncer but it's not very comfortable and the toys are so high and behind the baby's head. The removable chair is a nice feature but I would have rather bought a bouncer seperately and had a nicer swing.
If any clothes, be sure to have mittens, socks/booties, a couple of caps, onesies (I prefer Carter's) and since it'll be january get a bunting suit and maybe some comfy pants and sweaters with long sleeve onesies, warm fuzzy blanket (Carter's) and receiving blankets (I like flannel not thermal). I would hold off on buying outfits becuase new clothes come out ALL the time and if you stock up now (like I did before I had my baby) you'll be kicking yourself becuase you want all the newer cuter stuff!!! :-) Besides, my baby didn't fit into any cute outfits that were 0-3 until she was 1 1/2 mos. If there are some must-haves go ahead and pick up a couple.
Graco makes an awesome and very light travel system (carseat and base + stroller): Graco Metrolite.
The wiper warmer was a must, the diaper pail could wait, tons of washclothes were a must (I used a damp cloth instead of wipes for the first couple of weeks and still do occassionaly). If you want a changing station, cool, but the first 4 weeks we found ourselves changing her in the living room on a waterproof pad.
Breastfeeding: Lansinoh, My Breast Friend (not Boppy), breast shells to keep clothing off your nipples becuase they'll probably hurt, breast pads (Johnson's Nursing Pads w/ contour shape and superior absorption) and nursing bras (the best are the kind that unclip and fold down or that button in the middle and open out- not the kind that don't have clasps or buttons that you just pull to the side).
Bottle feeding: Gerber NUK bottles
ADD: any first aid medication can wait for a month or two, you'll need a thermometer (there is one at Babies-R-Us that you can use for rectal, oral and under arm- it has different connections), of course baby soap and a little tub or pad and he/she may look like he/she needs lotion but that's just skin that needs to come off so you won't need the lotion for a few weeks.

You will want some sleepers for the baby. Make sure you buy the kind that snap open down BOTH legs. It is a real pain at diaper change time when only one leg on a sleeper opens. You will be changing a TON of diapers so this will be a life-saver. I got some nice ones from babyGap and Sears Baby.
Definitely get some receiving blankets. I really like the ones by Swaddle Designs. They are really nice. They are more expensive than most, but they are way bigger. This way you can swaddle your baby in them longer for sleeping. I swaddled our daughter until she was 6 months old.
Buy some infant pre-fold cloth diapers too. These are really great to use as burping cloths. I like the ones made by Bummis.
Also, a bouncy chair or a baby swing is helpful. Some nights our daughter would sleep most of the night in the bouncy chair! I have heard that some babies like a swing, and some like a bouncy chair! Either way, one or the other, they are nice as they calm the baby, entertain them or put them to sleep so you get a chance to eat, shower or just go pee for a minute! We used a Fisher Price Link-a-doos bouncer it was under $40 and did the trick, I don't think there is any point in buying the more expensive ones.
Those are just a few things that I really used in the first few weeks of our daughters life!

Here are a few of the "couldn't live without" items on my list.
I love the Fisher Price Rainforest Swing, it swings two different ways and has great toys to look at. We used the Graco Travel Lite pack n play, it's small enough to fit next to your bed but the bassinett inside of it is huge and very comfy. I have used it as a bassinett for 7 months and then used the playpen part till 16 months. It's great for traveling, very light weight.. I love the snuggly, we used it a lot when walking around the mall or walking for excersice. And last but deffinetly not least a really great diaper bag, I recommend a Coach bag, very versitale and you can use it as a tote after your are done using it as a diaper bag.

Congrats!!
I would suggest scratch mits (baby's love to scratch themselves) and use an emery board to file down their nails. I didn't use nail clippers as baby's fingers are so small and I accidently pinched my little's ones fingers when she was a newborn! I felt so horrible. Emery boards work fine and don't hurt the baby.
Try and get zippered front sleepers if possible..makes diaper changes a lot quicker.
If you are planning to breastfeed, a breast pump will be very helpful!!
