The Theory of (Seafloor Spreading and) Plate Tectonics explains so many facts observed on the Earth. When a theory does this it has credibility and gains wide acceptance. Also, the underlying principle of mantle circulation is an excellent explanation as to why movement is seen in all the oceanic and continental plates. To be fair, there are detractors claiming Plate Tectonics is wrong, but most geologists are not enamored with the Slab Pull Theory.

I think the biggest reason is that we now are able to measure the movement of continents very precisely. We also have new views of the bottom of the ocean, like seven miles deep, that show evidence of the plates moving apart.
