Nails seem to be better putting things up, but screws are for holding things up/in place, things which will have stress placed on them. For example, putting up a framed picture: don't use nails on walls--drill a hole and use a screw in a screw anchor.
Nails are also good for temporary things, like boarding up a busted-out window, so you can more easily remove the boards when the glass is reinstalled.
Stuff like that. :)

Use screws when you see a need to take it apart.
Use nails other times.
In some house projects screws are used because of the projected need to either re-align or repair.
There are exceptions such as dry wall where a more uniform setting can be accomplished with screws rather then nails.

I use screws in all wood work except when it just temporary or I cant get a screw in a tight fit. Also I use square drive screws they don't strip out so easy and you can frequently avoid pre drilling(except in hard wood. Screw are especially helpful when you need to bring two boards together when one is warped or in outdoor situation where the wood will get wet as the nails will work out.

depends on application, is the screws showing. the screws will hold better but they are ugly and leave a big space for filler to cover up. a finishing nail looks better and very easy to hide.

screws should be used on something that might have a chance of backing out or you dont have a good hammer swing. for wood work i would use nails/brads along with glue if it for cabinets or stuff like that. if its for trim i would use brads/nails and use caulking along the edges for a tight look.

Woodwork
When is it better to used a nail and when is it better to use a screw?screw when its something you wont see, nail?i hope its a finish nail on area you will see, then sink them and fill to conseal.

use a screw if you need it to be long or be very strong. Nails arent cool.

nails are fine if there isn't going to be much stress on the pieces that you are placing together. screw are much stronger and are preferred if there is going to be any stress on the objects.
