man! that's what i'm doing now. we found a shop, checked with everybody and were told we could open a body shop there. we already had a small shop that we ran part time, and decided to quit our jobs and put everything into going full scale. we spent about 10g's renovating this new place and when we were done, we took down our spray booth at the old shop and brought it to the new one. once there, we called the town to see what the code said about how far away from the wall the booth had to be. they told us "you can't open a body shop in that building! no way no how!" now all we can do is wait to see if we can get rezoned. we had to put the booth back up in the old shop and lost 3 weeks work in the process. my advice to you is never believe what people tell you. check with every person in every dept. in your town. we're in a small town and while one person in the planning dept. said no problem, the other said no way. i wish you the best of luck, but don't trust anyone.

Instead of asking for help this way, you would be better off taking community college courses and working in some else's shop for a while, paying attention to the business. You don't mention that you have either.

Go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.
