Here's my problem:
My AC and heat only work on full blast, the lower settings don't turn on at all. Is it safe to assume it's just the knob/switch?

If it's likely to be the cause, where can I get it online? I don't know exactly what the part is called.

This is for a 1996 chevy cavalier car. any help would be appreciated

Chances are that it is just the blower control switch. you will most likely have to go to a chevy dealer to get that part, NAPA might have it.

Dear Cavalier-

The part you are looking for is called the "Resistor".

This is a part that controls the fan speed through a set of coils.

This part is located under the hood in the engine compartment. It is mounted to the plastic housing near the fan. It will have 5 wires that come out of it in a long connector. There should be two screws that hold this part into the plastic housing.

When you remove it, you will find 3 or 4 wire coils. These coils provide for the different fan speeds in the system. When this part fails, you will only have full speed on the fan.

This part is a fairly common failure on GM vehicles. I would also venture a guess that you have over 70K miles on the vehicle too. This is about when that part fails.

Just for the record, this part is what allows your dash switch to give you the other speeds. If the dash switch allows you to have "Off" and "High", its not the dash switch, (control). the failed part is the resistor.

My Mother had a 1995 Cavalier, and I replaced this same part.

The part is only available at a GM dealership, so don't waste your time at Kragen or Auto Zone unless they are an authorized AC Delco Parts Dealer.

The aftermarket ones burn out even faster.

Good Luck!

I have a '97 Cavalier. The fan switch is a 4 position switch. It doesn't (and never has) worked on the 2 lower positions. I don't think it's supposed to, because my wife's car, a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire (sister car to the Cavalier) is EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. There's only 2 fan speeds: Tornado and Hurricane. (minus the precipitation) It really sucks, but I think that's the way it's supposed to be. Huh, go figure!

Its not the switch. Its the blower resistors. They are in a replaceable block probably mounted near the blower motor on the firewall passenger side or under dash below glove box

Go to napaonline, or autozone they have switches that will match what you have. It may take some time, but I am sure you will find it there (it may be at the local store too).
