Does it shut down when you run a particular program? When it's still booting up? At random times, or more frequently the longer it's been on?
There are a number of things that might be causing it. Overheating is a prime suspect. It's possible you've had a cooling fan fail inside. Other possible causes could be a CPU, ram or motherboard that's gone bad (failed component or short circuit). On the software side, it could also be a virus or a corrupted system file. Sometimes memory leaks could screw up a system, though that was generally only a serious problem with Windows ME & previous versions.
If you can, try booting up into safe mode or using a bootup disk/CD. This should help narrow down whether the problem is software or hardware. Software problems are pretty easy to fix; use system restore to restore your system to back when it was working normally, and use an up-to-date antivirus program to do a thorough system scan. If it's a hardware problem, then unless you feel comfortable opening up your laptop I would suggest taking it in to a professional. Or if it's still under warranty, contact the manufacturer. Good luck!
P.S. I don't think this will solve your problem, but you may also want to make sure that your battery is secure and has a good connection. And that it's not one of those batteries that's been recalled for overheating. That could dump too much heat onto your laptop for it to handle.

uve either got a very close to unfixable virus, orur overheating,
to find which one this is run any windows in safe mode, if it doesent shutdown then you have a virus
if it does it could still be either of the two, get firedog to help you, even though they are on commercials, they like a challenge, i have family in firedog,
firedog is at circut city, geeksquad is nowhere near as good, because they use comercial products, firedog uses underground fixes that always work
