I am 66 and I have seen both in my lifetime. My biggest disappointment was Halley's Comet. I could not even see it! What a flop and it will not be back in my lifetime, good! Poor show!
The thing about eclipses though, they are eery and strange and it feels like time stands still. They are very neat! Objects on the ground take on strange shadows and hues too.

Eclipses are very auspicious events and as such if possible everyone should view them. There are however great dangers to eyes if you directly view a solar eclipse. Pacing a pinhole in a card, or using a magnifying glass to project an image on to a white peice of cardboard and looking ar the picture projected on the cardboard allows us to view a solar eclipse indirectly. If you are not sure how to do this maybe you should watch it on TV rather than spending all your life chanting. The Budha's "middle way" suggests that overdoing anything including chanting is not good. Likewise following rules all the time is usually bad. Most religious laws do not come directly from God as legalistic rules to follow without thinking. Any suggested behavior that has survived generations of testing should be worthy of consideration. Many religions have rules like: keep yourself clean, don't marry your sister, or don't look directly into the sun to see a solar eclipse. These rules should not however be followed blindly, viewing an eclipse by watching a shadow from a pinhole in a bit of cardboard is ok. Watching it on TV is also safe. It is not inauspicious to look directly at a solar eclipse it is downright stupid. Looking at a Lunar eclipse is very auspicious. Yes it might be prudent to stay indoors if you are tempted to look directly at a solar aclipse but looking at a lunar aclipse is likely safer than reading a book and risking a papercut. The only rule you need follow religiously is to love God, and to love God you need to love your neighbours and yourself. Loving yourself is the first step to enlightenment. If there is a god who dwells within you or made you in God's image, then you are worthy of love. All other rules are incidental, and should be ignored where appropriate.

I saw a total eclipse of the sun many years ago and then more recently (but still more than a decade ago) a rare annular eclipse (where the moon is far enough away from the earth so that it does not completely cover the disc of the sun but leaves a bright ring around the dark circle of the moon). Quite dramatic.

Yes, both a couple times. They're not really THAT rare. They usually talk about them on the news before. They're cool though.
