okay,,, I am deperate for money!!! behind on mortgage and every other bill I have...then comes a check for $7,900 to my business in error. It was meant for another company by name very similair to mine. The error was a title company sending the money to me by accident.

So, I could have deposited it into my business account since it was made out to my company.

I did not do that, Title company called of course, and I told them the check was never cashed.

sure, I know I did the right thing,,,, but still a tough decsion,,, what would you have done

Apparently you are living above your means so take a little time and ascertain why the problem. As for the $7,900 check, you did the right thing . You could have deposited the check , used the money and been brought up on charges of petty larceny or is it grand theft? That would have added another burden. One lesson taught to me by a vendor, with the exception of the mortgage what ever cash you have toward paying your bills make sure you dole it out so that every creditor gets a bit. Tell them your circumstances, in writing, when you send the first partial payment. Most will cooperate. As for the mortgage , visit the holder, see if you can lower the monthly payments by extending the payment period( if it is 20 yrs. ask for 25 or 30yrs thereby lowering the payment.

I'm so proud of you for doing the right thing! I'm really glad that you didn't create even bigger, more difficult problems for yourself by cashing the check. I'm sure the temptation must have been great, but you took the high road and did the right thing. Awesome!!

I hope that if I'm ever in a similiar situation I will be as big a man as you are. I THINK I would have done the same, but you never really know until you're put in the situation.

You did the right thing I would have done the same. If you did any different you would have only got caught out anyway easy to trace the cheque. Hopefullyyour honesty sends a little good karma your way. I wish you the best of luck in sorting out your finances.

i would've done just that, I know a lot of people who have gotten arrested from stealing money that didn't belong to them, this one girl was a record keeper on how much money they spent on everything, so she jacked up all the prices and took the extra money that she added to how much the supplies were, and then she got caught after she paid off her house, bought a brand new Mercedes, and a whole bunch of crap and apparently her husband didn't know, so after she switched jobs to try and hide from it, they found her and one day she said that she was going on a vaca w/ her daughter but she actually had a court date because it was in the paper...
stealing money that wasn't meant for you is just wrong and you'll end up getting caught, you did the right thing.

Well considering that you knew that the money did not really belong to you, had you cashed it, depending on your state laws you could have easily be looking at criminal charges for grand larceny. It sucks to be behind in your bills, something which happens to all of us. However, jail or even just being caught up in court for months or years sucks even worse.

the same thing. first of all it is not hard to trace up things like that. but foremost, honesty is still the best policy and there will never be any better policy than this so it is best to do what you have done. i would even have called them myself if possible. but you did great and whatever others might think of you or say otherwise you deserve the best congratulations and appreciation!

Right decision. Even if you wanted to "borrow" it you're already in the hole and let's face it - it's harder to get out when you're doing something wrong. About your mortgage and other bills, have you contacted a consumer credit counselor? They really do help...

The right decision is the easiest. You did the right thing. You're a class act.

Not taking money that does not belong to you is always the right thing. You did it right. I hope good fortune comes your way.
