We were made to face the Pain. God had enough Angels to please Him with prayers, He wants to test our patience in face of hardships.

The amount of pain in life is directly proportional to ones attitude. If you think life is painful then it is. If, on the other hand, you see adversity as the opportunity to grow it is no longer so intensely painful. Perhaps uncomfortable, and troubling, but not so painful.

If you see yourself as a victim, then yes, life is going to be painful. If you see yourself as empowered, and capable, then life will be difficult at times, but not insurmountable.

Ancient Europeans wrote about Ages of Man.

There are also many other references to various
types of world ages or Ages of Man in Hopi
(worlds), Mayan (suns) and other cultures of
antiquity. Giorgio de Santillana, the former
professsor of the history of science, mentions
approximately thirty ancient cultures that
believed in the concept of a series of ages and
the rise and fall of history, with alternating
Dark and Golden Ages.

More details of these Ages are available in the
Yuga concept of the Hindus. The present age
is known as Kali Yuga (age of darkness).

Physical or mental?
If physical pain...then we need only to look at a longtime sufferer of leprosy to appreciate the great responsibility of pain.

If mental...I would ask who or what in this world can cause you pain without your permission? If I am rejected...MUST I feel worthless?
Pain(physical) is mandatory, Suffering(mental) is optional.

Nietzsche essentially insists that those things which do not destroy us make us strong. Another wise writer relates that tribulation perfects us or helps us to acquire the quality of perseverance (James 1:2-4).

Because negative reinforcement works. Negative feedback is necessary to contrast the positive (thereby making positive things positive). e.g. Without pain, we wouldn't know not to be mean or cruel to others, because we wouldn't understand the consequences of our actions.
