pcos is mislabeled b/c not all women with pcos have cysts on their ovaries. it is a condition with a number of symptoms and people may have one or more symptoms. i was diagnosed in 2003, but knew i had it based on my research and symptoms. my sister also has it and i suspect that my paternal grandmother had it too.
lab test should be done to confirm pcos and to exclude other conditions. FSH, LH, testosterone, DHEA, prolactin, thyroid. an ultrasound may not be necessary, but is a good idea if you are TTC.
my symptoms were irregular periods (every 2 months or so), increased hair growth on my abdomen and chest.
my lab results showed some elevated testosterone levels, my ultrasound was normal, my LH was elevated (although this was not done o day 3 of cycle so might not be so reliable), no sign of insulin resitance. also i am on the thin side. the point is that symptoms really vary from person to person.
i am on metformin now.

I've always been confused about this. 2 years ago, I went to see an ob/gyn that I had never seen before, but he was on my approved list for my insurance. I went to him because 2 weeks after I got my period, I started bleeding again, just like another period. He listened to my symptoms, did a vaginal check, and then ordered a vaginal ultrasound. Then he told me I had polycystic ovaries, which means I get my period more than once a month. But, I don't have any of the other symptoms the other women have been talking about. So, I don't know if my polycystic ovaries and PCOS are 2 different things. If I'm on the pill, it controls it and I only get it once amonth, without it, I'm on my period ever 2 weeks. It sucks!

My list of symptoms:
No period for 3mos.
Extreme acne
Weight gain around the middle
Fatigue
More frequent urination
Abdomen pain
Nausea
... basically, I felt as if I was pregnant, without numerous negative HPTs
I went to the Dr. with a list of my syptoms and she ran some blood tests: complete blood count, thyroid panel, hormone check (for progesterone, estrogen, LH, FSH and testosterone levels) and glucose/insulin. When the results came back as normal for the blood count, normal for the thyroid, with increased testosterone, increased estrogen, low LH and normal FSH (I think that was the pairing) and nothing for the progesterone, with high insulin and very low glucose, she concluded that, hormonally, I presented with PCOS and ordered an ultrasound to complete the diagnosis.
The ultrasound showed multiple under-developed folicles (nicknamed "string of pearls") and very swollen ovaries (which, btw, hurt like hell!). That completed the diagnosis.

What you should do is track your symptoms. Keep track of everything that goes on with your body, everything that you're feeling - write it down, make a list, ask other people to help you notice changes in your appearance, etc. Then take it to your Dr. If the symptoms are enough to concern you, they should be enough to concern your Drs, too ... even if it's not PCOS. Be thorough, be organized - make your Dr. listen to you.

Good luck!

I have known for over a year I have it, but was just diagnosed with it this year. I questioned my doctor on the possibility of it, had a checklist of symptoms with the ones i have checked off, and had a blood test done.

Weight gain around the middle
hirsuitism
difficulty losing weight
insulin resistance
hypoglycemic
bad anxiety
irregular cycles
and infertility

go get checked out...

I have it. I was diagnosed via ultrasound. I was not having periods, my blood sugar was elevated and I was having trouble conceiving. I don't have as many symptoms as some do, but I have no periods, weight gain around the middle and of course, I can't conceive. Symptoms differ from person to person.
