There is an old tradition (particularly in England) of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve. Charles Dickens was certainly not the first with A Christmas Carol, although it's certainly the most famous.
Although I'm not sure of the origin of the tradition, I'd guess it goes back to the days of the Christmas feasts in the great halls and castles, where bards and minstrels told and sang the old tales and legends, some (but not all of them) scary. Likely the idea that Christmas was one of the most holy days of the year made the telling of scarier tales seem safer the night before!

It all stems from Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Read the book. I thought this was required reading for all 7th grade students in the US. This story has been retold in countless movies starring Bill Murray, George C Scott, etc.

My school choir always assume it means "A Christmas Carol", though it's not very scary.
