When we stop being black Americans, hispanic Americans, white Americans, rich Americans, Republican Americans, Democratic Americans etc., and JUST BE AMERICANS AGAIN.
When we stop treating the people who actually produce things in this country (this does NOT include CEOs of auto plants [for example] who haven't the first idea which way an engine goes under the hood of a car, but is somehow jusitfied in awarding him- or herself hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses they neither earned nor deserve) as menial serfs to be exploited and cast away when they outlive their so-called "usefullness" (has it ever occurred to the people of the US, our GREATEST resource of intelligence and experience is completely ignored and squandered in this country? Why do we not allow senior citizens (those willing to give it a try) to teach our children the experiences they have gained from a long life?
When we start approaching solutions to grave problems with logic, pragmatism and hard reason, not 'wishful thinking', not the result of "focus groups" and "polls" (most people cannot solve a quadratic equation, flunked geometry in High School, yet feel eminently qualifed to render mathematical opinions based on faulty linear thinking, rather than inductive or deductive reaonsing), here's a hint: Hate, disguised as parlor patriotism, is no answer, and neither is our current policy of assuming only ONE group of disconnected, old, rich, white men are the only ones qualified to lead this country.
For example, why do nuclear power plants (on land) have such abysmal safety records, yet there has never been ONE radiological incident onboard a US Naval nuclear submarine? Why, if we ARE to build to nuke plants on land, can we not build them UNDERGROUND? Having myself worked on the construction of the Seabrook Nuclear Plant in NH in the early 80s, I'm here to tell you much of the containment is already underground, we just need to design them so the entire facility is that way, or out to sea on utility ships, or in orbit around the Earth, or even (political will notwithstanding) on Luna itself.
The I/C engine has never been an efficient method of private transportation, especially when it wastefully uses so much of a non-renewable source for that energy. Non-renewable? It is not only a finite resource, it is the main, base resource of fertilizers, plastics, lubrication and other uses not associated with burning it at NASCAR rallies or in POVs. Your great grandchildren will curse your memories for pissing away their legacy in such monstrosities as "My Johnson is Bigger than Your Johnson" Hummers and SUVs you see on the roads, while oil climbs over $100 a barrel and both young and old people who live in disgustingly polluted cities die from the poisonous air they breathe.
When we demand meaningful, enforcable campaign finance reform, so that our only choices for political leadership actually have the CITIZENS of this country's best interests at heart, not multi-national corporations with no loyalty to America or its Constitution.
When we insist our leaders show the world the BENEFITS of democracy by being a leading example of fairness, maturity and conscience, not by bombing them until they agree to democratic reforms they are neither mature enough or responsible enough to either appreciate, desire or sustain the democratic ideal.
When we as a society recognize that ANY system of government which does not hold as its core principle "Women and Children First", is doomed to extinction.
Maybe then we will have a country we can ALL once again be proud of.

Today I went to Lowe's and asked the manager to put MADE IN USA labels on the shelves to highlight american made products. He said only corporate could do it, no chain store can take it upon themselves. But do you think Black & Decker would be too pleased if their made in China tools didn't sell as good because we bought an American made competitor brand? It seems impossible to get things started. I also asked them to not sell spray paint to kids under 18, but got the same answer. Any ideas?

When the people learn to need less and take a break from serving the corporate pigs...until then, we whistle while we work while the evil rich enjoy their croquet and shellfish.
