Why is everyone so grossed out by this? My grandparents are cousins and their children are perfectly fine; my aunt has a post graduate degree!
It's common for Arabs to marry each other.

But...marrying your cousin is NOTHING like marrying your parents; in what way are they similar?
And the having a degree thing was meant to show that just because your parents are cousins doesn't mean you have to be a lunatic or some freaky inbred like in Deliverance (the film with John Voight).

I'm not sure what the problem with this is either. It's not just in the Arab world this happens. It is perfectly legal in Canada to marry your first cousins. Who you cannot marry are people you are related to by lines of consanguinity. Ie. a man cannot marry his mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, or grandmother. A woman cannot marry her father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, or grandfather.
Genetically, the chances of you having a child born with a deformity because of being married to your first cousin aren't greater than if you were married to a perfect stranger.
I know quite a few people married to their first cousins, and they have children who are all perfectly healthy. Would I marry my first cousin? If I grew up with them and knew them well, probably not. If I hardly knew them, maybe, if they were the right person for me.

What does having a degree have to do with grandparents being related? Does this make them more normal? I think the idea in itself is gross but back then people married close relatives all the time.

I married my 5th cousin, blood related. Wasn't aware of it until we visited my Granny. We have a child, 8 1/2 and in the 4th grade. Straight A's but should only be in the 3rd grade.
So much for genetic defects commonly found with inbreeding.
Of course, the old royalty of England plainly are prime examples of why cousins shouldn't marry.

Sounds like the family that lives in the woods from the movie wrong turn. When your family tree does not fork, it may be a problem. Are you from Arkansas by chance?

You must live in a very small town. ARABS I guess thats how you can own so many little stores and have enough family to run them all. doesnt suprise me that they would be having sex with their cousins.

It's just kinda weird. And it's not like people think that the people who marry their cousins are weird, it's just very uncommon. It's just pretty weird. And the offspring of married cousins are often, um...misshapen.

Twenty-Five states prohibit marriage between first cousins. I think most of the concerns are about reproduction and genetic diseases.
