Why not trade young for young instead of johan? I think the yankees should make a strong push for bedard, peavy, or kazmir.
I would give hughes, horne, tabata, melky, and clippard for any of these three, but not for santanna. I think bedard should get the most media attention for a trade.

your right they are the same age but (bedard)one would cost less than the other(sanatna) to sign for an extension. I forgot to say dan haren from oakland could also be a great push.

Well, for one thing, Bedard is the same age as Santana, so he shouldn't be included him in your analysis.

As for the others, Kazmir is a couple of years away from free agency, and the Rays don't have a sense of urgency to trade him like the Twins do with Santana. The Padres aren't in dire financial straits like the Twins, so they'd be tough to deal with regarding Peavy, who is already signed through 2009. I'm sure the Pads will either resign him or make a move before that contract expires.

Rightchoice - I do agree that Bedard would be cheaper, and he's very underrated. If someone could get him at a decent price, it would be a great move. My guess is that he'd be easier to pry away than either Peavy or Kazmir.

Its not like they can trade for any player they want. Even though Santana is better than all those guys (except maybe Peavy) and they can trade for him doesn't mean they can trade for the others.

Bedard is in the division, is the worst of the 4 and is the same age as Santana, and the Orioles are not willing to trade him.

Peavy is a perfect for the Yankees except for the fact the Padres have no intention of giving him up for about 10 years, you have no idea how he would handle New York, and even if he was available, the Yankees farm system is not plentiful enough to trade for him (you would need like Delmon Young, Hanley Ramirez, Phil Hughes, Clay Bucholz...). Yes that was sarcasm.

Kazmir is in the division, not available, but could handle the pressure (sox killer). Again the Rays should only take a compilation of cheap, young superstars and top prospects but who knows after that Delmon Young trade.

Stupid Yankee fans.

Bedard is the same age as Santana.
Kazmir could, but the Rays have no reason to trade him.
Peavy is younger and just as talented Santana so he could command even more than Santana.
And don't forget Dan Haren, he's up for grabs too. Probably who the Yankees should be going for if they fail to grab Johan.

But for the record, one reason to grab Santana is so the Red Sox can't.

I get the feeling that santana will not be traded til the middle of the season...and that you will see either a bedard or Haren deal. I hope the Rays keep Kazmir and start making their way out of the basement

If they fail to land Santana, they will go after Bedard. I'm not sure if Kazmir and Peavy are available.

hhhmm maybe because Santana is the best left hander in baseball and already is a lock for the HOF at 28 years old. but i agree bedard should get more attention.

You assume that any of them is available. I suppose Peavey could be had for Wang, Joba, and A-Rod if the Yanks pay his contract, but I mean realistically. The other two are in the East and won't be traded to an East team.
