Hi there. I am an ex-smoker. I "tried" to quit several times over the years. But, only half heartedly. I always said I would quit when I got pregnant. And I did. (I smoked from 1991-2002. Smoked up 1 to 1 1/2 packs per day, depending on if I was out drinking - I was 18 when I started... LOL)

I quit smoking about 3 weeks after I found out I was pregnant. I weaned myself down, and within about 3 weeks, I could only take one or two puffs and I was done. That was in September 2002.

In October 2003, I went to visit my father and they all smoke out there. I ended up having 2 cigarettes. It was so gross, my lungs hurt, and I felt "high". I hated it.

I haven't smoked since. I still crave it though. In fact, just tonight I had a craving. But, my daughter is more important than my psychological addition to smoking, so I don't.

It also grosses me out when I smell it now. I can't believe I ever stunk that bad! LOL Another good reason NOT to smoke!

I only tried once and I succeeded, but the average is about 10 times before a person actually succeeds in quitting. I've been smoke free for 2 and a half years and I still think about it just about every day. It gets easier and easier as time goes on. I smoked for about 13 years before I quit and was up to 30 or more cigarettes a day. If you are trying to quit here's a good piece of advice. Do everything that you can to help yourself quit. Go to programs, take the patch or gum, talk to people, educate yourself..it all helps. Good luck!

i quit once for about 5 yrs, then smoked a cigar a friend gave me cuz they had a baby, Smoked a few and quit again. that's it. you can quit without all the help. All you need to do is WANT TO. If you don't really want to, you wont. Cold turkey is really not so bad. All you have to do is deny your body the nicotine. The desire will go away. Then return, and go away again. When i say Deny it. i mean NOT EVEN 1 puff. zero. Sure, its a Little tough at first, but it gets better. Tell you what. Let cancer show up and see how fast you quit. I smoked about35 yrs. I cant STAND the smell today. When you start, stick with it. Will power helps. Hood luck

I'm a non smoker. I'm glad that I never smoked because I think that it is bad for you, but at the same time, I think the government is setting down too many laws and interfering in people's lives too much. It should be up to the businesses whether or not they want to allow smoking in their establishments. I'm just afraid the government doesn't know where to stop in telling people what they should and shouldn't do.

I smoked for 22years at about 15-20 per day, I tried stoping three times before being successful, I used no gum or patches just decided one day that its time so just do it, the ad;s on tv helped also the coughing in the morning was a major benefactor, I have now quit for 8years and cant stand the smell of it at all. If someone is smoking I have to move. Not struggling at all, it was tough at first but I think the cravings left me after about 2 months, it also helps if your partner quits with you, even most of my friends have quit now so its simple. Be strong and dont give in, go to the doctor and get a lung xray, see all the crap smoking leaves behind and you will soon want to quit, Good Luck Pete

Just about the time I turned 16, I started smoking. I tried to quit several times and several ways (chewing gum, seminars, cold turkey). Finally, in the Fall Quarter when I was just short of 25-years old, using a behavior modification technique as a class project for my Psychology 101 class at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, taught by Dr. Powers, I finally had the mental and emotional tools I needed to quit. I started up again a few months later, but only when I was drinking. I quit both the smoking and drinking 6 days after my first divorce, which was just 3 days before I turned 45. So, I smoked for about 29 years (and drank).

I struggled for a while when I quit for the Psychology class project, but since I quit at age 45, I have had very few and very mild urges to go anywhere near it (or the booze). And, now, even a small whiff of cigarette smoke is quite offensive to me.

I tried to quit smoking about 4 times. I have been quit for 14 years, and no, I'm not tempted anymore. I smoked for 20 years. I've always read and heard that you have to try a number of times before actually quitting, and I believe that! One thing that helped me was, when I got something to drink, it would be water, or milk, something that didn't go well with a cigarette. My husband smokes, and that's enough for me! I'm getting my "pink" lungs back!!!!

I tried twice, after smoking for many more years than you have been alive!
I quit cold turkey just three months ago and have no problems. You have several means at your disposal: patches, gum ,Smokers Anonymous to name a few. The chief ingredient is WILL POWER!! Go ahead, YOU can do it . Good luck and God Bless.

I smoked 1 to 3 packs of cigarettes daily from age 15 to 49. In the latter years I also smoked cigars and a pipe. The day I quit I had three cigarettes and then laid them down and never smoked again and that is, 27 years ago.
