Just moved into my new house and i have a modem right now and have set up the wirelss network but i can't receive the singal downstairs. I know its just that the singal is not strong enough to reach downstairs but is there anyway i could make the singal stronger with a boster or somthing? I would like to keep the modem where is is upstairs so that i can get the internet up there.

Just go to http://radiolabs.com
There are repeaters, bigger antennas, power boosters and just about all you could want.
In fact one that comes to mind for this is
http://radiolabs.com/products/wireless/wireless-range-extender.php
just an add on antenna with power boost built into it.

There probably is device you can buy to boost the wireless signal between floors, but
I suggest you go to www.metacafe.com and look-up the How-To's on increasing your wireless signal/sensitivity. They're easy to follow and cheap.
I would not advise on any hacks that involve cracking-open your PC unless you're willing to accept the possible negative consequences.

depending on your router model there are probably third party firmware that will allow you to increase the power output. this will help out quite a bit. be careful not to go too high, but there is a fairly large margin there. the makers of the software usually include info on how much you can increase without damaging...try this site www.dd-wrt.com and see if they support your router
