Well, to go way back, I think The Beatles improved with every album.
Blackmore's Night improved by their third album, when they started to add more electric guitar to their work.
Post '75 Fleetwood Mac was a definite improvement on the Bob Welch years. But I tend to regard Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, post PG Fleetwood Mac, and post '75 Fleetwood Mac as 3 seperate bands.
And I agree with Brian about T.Rex :)

When Tyrannosaurus Rex changed their name to T. Rex and went glam, it really improved their sound. The early work was just too...dense. But as soon as Marc Bolan starting singing about sex, well...10 #1 singles in 2 years really says something now don't it?
Sly & The Family Stone started out as just another R&B band, but around their third album, things started to get funky. And that funk was awesome.
Aerosmith sounded almost like a Stones cover band when they first started out. Then comes Get Your Wings. The music gets tighter, leaner, meaner, and druggier. From then on, we get some of the best American hard rock ever.

Snow Patrol's previous two albums were very different from the first two albums they release. It has changed for the better for the band due to success, but the older stuff was still decent.
Australian Band, The Cops have also changed their sound for the better as they have seen more success across Australia.

I agree about Radiohead, although I still really love their early stuff too, including Pablo Honey.
I'd say Muse have definitely improved over the years, although having said that I do think that their second album, "Citizen Erased" is their best, but their sound has certainly matured well.

The Kinks early stuff was rather standard R&B/rock for the time (with the obvious occasional great song), but given a few years they crafted some of the best rock and pop gems ever to be made with Ray Davies putting out some very memorable lyrics.

The additionof Micheal Schenker to the lineup on their third album turned them from a average space rock band into a phenomenal hard rock juggernaut
LOL Sarah, while I don't detest Yes 2.0 as badly as You do I agree 90125 doesn't quite stack up to The Yes Album

Tomahawk definitely! This new path they have taken with the third record completely owns their previous two. (and this is a band in which i heard each album as it came out, as opposed to working out of order, where one tends to like the album they got into first).

U2, except for their Pop album I think their sound has matured and sounds much better than Boy.

Muse.
Don't really like their early stuff that much but LOVE "Black Holes and Revelations" with all its Queen/ELO influence.

sugar ray - while i'm not really a fan of this band, their older stuff is horrendous, while they're more recent stuff actually sort of resembles real music.
