most of the time it's (based on a 6speed). one down then up for the rest. it would look something like this if it was printed on the side of the case. (like on shifter knobs in cars)

there are some bikes that have neutral on bottom

I use a bungie cord or two.

Shift pattern?
Mine are 1 down and 4 up, and 1 down and 5 up.
Honda and HD.

Down 1, up neutral, then up up up is 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc

1st is down then up half to neutral another half to 2nd then up one to third, ect...
