I'm thinking about buying an MG convertible. Would it be hard to get repaired or can I bring it to an ordinary mechanic. I live in Suburban Philadelphia.

British iron has it's own little peculiarities. Like the starter for the MG being on a knob you pull and which looks like a manual choke. Try to find someone who specializes in European cars and then ask if they have any experience with the MG's. They are a real blast to drive aren't they?

Welcome !

The world of MG motoring is full of enthusiasts who love their cars and are willing to help others. There are MG clubs in every US state and many many cities. You can search on line for one near you. They will have monthly or quarterly meetings and it is great fun. Get ready to meet good people and make friends.

If you own an MG you will find them relatively easy to work on. They DO have their quirks; a famous one being wiring. But learning, fixing, and driving is all part of the hobby of MG motoring.

Parts are readily available from many sources. Go to mossmotors.com and order a free catalog for your MG. They come with great exploded diagrams that are helpful themselves.

Be careful if someone has cannibalized the car you want to buy for parts. Just stay away unless you need it for parts for your main car. Look on line to get an idea what the car is worth before buying. They are not rare so don't overpay.

I own a 71 MG Midget and love to zoom around in it.

So welcome to the club. And best wishes.
Craig

Get involved with a local MG enthusiast club! They will help you find a reputable repair shop. I work on lots of cars like that and they aren't difficult just somewhat different. Parts are readily available - and you'll need some :-) Good idea to get AAA towing too. My favorite expression is 'it will probably get you there, but it might not get you back'. Again do an internet search for MG clubs in the Phila area.

In Philadelphia there should be some one who knows MG's.
Yes they have problems and they are with in the ability of an average mechanic. But either you know Lucas systems or you don't.
Contact the Roadster Factory, as they may be able to help you with finding a mechanic, and/or parts. They also can help you do it yourself.
MG's also suffer from a unique carbration system, while in many ways better then the US counterpart, have their own unique problems.
Just too much to say.

Most "ordinary mechanics" specialize in late model American cars. Although older British cars aren't overly complicated or anything most mechanic's won't be used to working on them, and will probably have to search longer for a part supplier. You are better off going to a specialist on Europeon cars.
