How long after mailing will it take for the post office to return a letter that is short 2 cents postage?

Forgot to put on the 2 cent stamp. Was a local letter. Should I go to the post office to see if they have it?

they might, just might go ahead and deliver it anyway, or even deliver it postage due, and try to charge the recipient the 2 cents at time of delivery.


Otherwise, you should have it in prob 3-5 biz days.

They will probably just deliver it. Or maybe deliver it postage due. They put a note in the recivers mailbox to stop by the post office, pay the 2 cents and pick up the letter.
If they return it, I would say it will be returned to you in 3-5 days.

There IS NO correct answer. I work in a bank mail room. I once had 24 consecutive monthly statements for a single checking account come back return to sender the same day. That means one came back in less than a week, and one took nearly 2 years. The others ranged literally EVERYWHERE in between.

I suggest you ask the local post office for advice.

I doubt they will return it. If it's to a private individual, that person will get charged the 2¢ postage due. If it's to a company, they probably won't deliver it. The Postal "Service" gets a more Republican attitude all the time. In the 60's, you used to be able to make companies pay for the nasty letters you sent them when their pricky attitude pissed you off, but no more!

they may deliver it postage due or the carrier may put a 2 cent stamp on it, or even the clerk. So you may never see it again and it gets to where it needs to go.

More than likely they will deliver it with postage due or just forget it. Not very likely they will return it for postage due.
