the guy above my comment is right but a really decent good looking GTO has got to sell for at least 25 grand, your doing the buys a huge favor if your going to sell it for 5 grand bro. No to mention original engine and supped exhaust and im sure some other things as well were done, probably the seats correct? also the engine, it shouldn't be a tri power 389 because the the tri power set up was stopped in 66 or that same year, however if it does have a tri power its not original engine but its a desirable one. if its got the 400 thats pretty good as well since that was the year they were introduced, seriously don't be a sucker and don't sell it for less then 25 grand. trust me there are people out there willing to pay that much, go into more detail what it has original, what you repaired and made better, the amount of money put into it, the type of engine of course, and seriously put ads on ebay or auto trader and don't budge the offer.

You need to do a few things for yourself to state your case to your dad:
1) Get the factory invoice from PHS. This will show you how the car was equipped. For example, what engine the car came with is the difference between it being the typical GTO versus the top of the heap.
2) Get Tom DeMauro's GTO book. This will show you what stock GTOs are like and how they never came with "leather and suede" (even if that's an apt description of what interior it has now), options available, and so forth.
If, by the options it was ordered with, it's a typical GTO, and if he wasn't the original owner, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to sell because it can always be replaced. But if it is a Ram Air car, for example, you'd be wise to hold on and figure out how to exploit it to what the market will bear, so that means figuring out what special pieces are still with the car.
Trying to keep the car will require a little effort from you, but with your diligence and research, you may be able to state a case for yourself - I've given you two very important places to start.

67 GTO's are worth alot depending on originality and condition, $5,000 is a steal for that car. If its got 20" rims and tires and a new exhaust its gotta be pretty nice !!
The NADA link is great for pricing the old cars and alot of the appraisers use it when they appraise their cars.
Most 67 GTO's are selling for 15 to 25 grand and convertibles are 25 to 50 or more, especially if it's a tri-power 389..
I'm a PONTIAC FREAK !!!!! ------My 69 firebird convertible is in Yahoo Autos Custom, and I've had a 67 firebird,68 Impala, 69 Impala, 69 Camaro,76 Mazda RX4,and still have my 69 Firebird convertible !!! I did all the bodywork, paint and the mechanicals on the 68 impala and the 69 Camaro and the 69 firebird.

Go to EBay "completed listings" to get an idea of the real value. Check to see if there is a Musclecar or GTO forum, on the web, find out value and learn how many guys regret selling their's!

Go here, http://www.nadaguides.com/, select used car prices then muscle cars. Once you get to the Pontiac and 67 GTO you can configure it the way yours is and get a pretty good idea of what it costs. I just did a quick check with only a couple of options and got $22k - $42k depending on the condition. The prices on NADA, by the way, are, if anything, conservative.

LOL, a real Pontiac freak would know that the '67 never came with a 389 or tri-power... ;)
Anyway, if dad's car is nice, $5k is way to little money. But if it needs serious work to make it nice, well maybe he knows more than you think he does. It's hard to tell from this side of the internet.

I would ask at least 15 k for it. Musclecars especially the REALLY desireable ones in good shape can easily get more.
