My husband was lifting weights at the gym tonight. While he was lifting, he heard a pop in his lower back. Since then it has been very painful. He walks with his back hunched over (it hurts for him to straighten it out) and he limps. I think he should go to the ER, but he claims it would be pointless because they wouldn't do anything. Am I overreacting or should he get seen by a doctor tonight?

Since he was at the gym, I must assume he is a fairly active guy. That said, he probably knows whether or not the ER is appropriate. I know I listen to my body and do as it commands. Get an appointment early next week. If it gets worse, all bets are off and he probably should go even if he can stand the pain.

More info please. Numbness, tingling in legs? What specific area of the lower back hurts and how far down. Left of the spine, right, middle etc. Tail bone area or up further? Tender to touch? The ER would do X-rays tonight more than likely and help with pain control. He needs ice packs, possibly alternating with heat...kinda depends if the heat helps him feel any better. Hopefully he has just strained a muscle and hasn't herniated a disc. Does he feel better laying on the floor flat? Does it hurt when he raises his legs when he's laying on the floor? All of this info would be helpful. Tell him not to mess with his back. If it doesn't heal correctly, he might have trouble for the rest of his life.

usually i would suggest putting ice on it and then go to the doc in the morning... but since it is a back injury i would suggest being seen tonight especially if he is experiencing numbness or tingling in his arms and legs

Also, the Chiropracter isnt a good idea either... at least not until u know what was injured(i wouldnt go anyway)

NEVER USE HEAT... especially on a new injury... HEAT will cause any swelling to increase and may cause additional problems
if u must use heat then wait 72 hours because after that point there shouldnt be any new swelling...

If he is having unbearable pain, numbness, weakness down his leg,or has bladder or bowel problems due to back pain..then go to ER..otherwise use ice x 3days...no heating pads,etc..for several days!!!,advil per label...

I think you should take him just incase...it may be nothing...but then again...it could be A BIG SOMETHING! Just take him...even if he goes kicking and screaming (which he probably won't because his back hurts) at least you will both know if he's ok or not
