Pileated Woodpeckers need a slightly different suet feeder than other woodpeckers. You will usually not see them on a suet cage, or on a feeder that only has a small tail prop.

You can see a feeder here that is designed specifically for Pileateds: http://www.birdsforever.com/woodyfeeders.html
(about halfway down the page) Or you can use log feeders: http://www.birdsforever.com/suetfeed.html (again, about halfway down the page)

Here is a good site that tells how to attract woodpeckers in general: http://www.birdsforever.com/woody.html

Here is a GREAT site, with tips to attract Pileateds, including erecting a Pileated Woodpecker House: http://thebluejaysgarden.com/9pileatedhousing.html

Lots of luck! I had a Pileated at one of my large suet logs once, but he never came back. I didn't make any effort to attract him, as I already have at least one pair each of three different woodpecker species - Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied - plus Whitebreasted and Redbreasted Nuthatches and an occassional Brown Creeper, and I was afraid the larger, more agressive Pileated might scare them all away.

Pileated's are very timid. I have managed to get 4 other species of peckers to our feeders in NW Connecticut, but can only enjoy the big boys through the field glasses. I know we have a nesting pair in up the hill from the house watch them all summer, from afar, only once did one briefly stop at an old stump in the yard to hunt for insects. BTW we live on the edge of and old growth stand.

We had pileated woodpeckers in our Pine trees for years. My Mother put suet out for them , set up her eisle and did watercolors of them. All of a sudden they left and never came back.
I hope yours shows up again.

Give them some time to get used to the feeders.
