...and how well off are they in Western society?
I mean, being a "soft-hearted" person (man, especially), is definitely going to hinder performance in career and possibly even social relationships?

Who would want to live in a society without soft - hearted people? We actually need a lot more of them. They are the ones who understand or feel for others misery. They might have a disadvantage in the business-world, but certainly not in social relationships. I personally prefer a soft-hearted person to a stone-hearted asshole.

How very wrong you are. Being soft hearted is an assets not a detriment. My husband is soft hearted. This does not make him a weak man. In fact his capacity to empathize and comfort others makes him even stronger. In the work field he is able to lead by example. He can tell if his employees are distressed in anyway and he can offer help or an ear to listen. By being able to do this is eases his employees troubles and they preform better.

I think what you might be thinking is that a soft hearted person is also a doormat. That is where you are wrong. You can be soft hearted and strong at the same time. When someone lets someone else take advantage of them or walk all over them. They are not being soft hearted. They suffer from low self esteem and they allow the bad behavior of others in the hopes that these people will like them.

I think in such a horrible world (in many respects) kindness and soft-hearted are qualities we need more of....

AND no it doesn't hinder a thing Bill Gates is a very gentle and giving individual, and ALSO a fine business man, SAM WALTON of WALMART..(maybe youve heard of him) was one of the nicest people I ever had the pleasure to meet....

he ALSO was one heckuv a business man.....

Being soft-hearted may hinder one in the business world, since it certainly impedes the killer instinct, but it enables a person to look at himself in the mirror without being uncomfortable, much less ashamed.
