What is it called when you sell something of your own to buy someone else a gift for something they have. But they sold the thing that your gift was for, to buy you something for the thing you sold to buy their present?

but the story was the husband sold his pocket watch to buy his wife a comb...the wife cut her hair to buy her husband a new chain for his pocket watch
