I aint an emo but they appaer to be a group that have a definitive style; fringes, MCR on the ipod, and a myspace profile, i hav nothin but respect for them . They do though appear to be a cry for attention. Originally it seems emo was an evolving type of music that in time attracted an entourage of those that agreed with its overall depressing sentiment

Unfortunately, what I see is a lot of teenagers needing a lot of attention and not getting it from someone. That's the Emos I've seen anyway. I see an almost need to feel bad or depressed, to revel in it. There must be drama all the time and seem to be a need to be the center of attention. Just my take. I'm a Mom, my kiddo has some friends that are emos, she's not one but there are a few running around my house on occasion. They don't tend to stay emo for an extended period though. Would love to know more.
I appreciate the info from Emocide Organ: I totally believe the part about the younger teens just trying to fit in somewhere. Often they really don't have a clue of what it is they are standing for or think they are standing for.

Emo is a stereotype. Emo is actually a type of music from around the 80's and not all of their songs are about wanting to die or depression. Emo is not a type of person, it is a type of music! People who think that 'emos' are attention whores are wrong. Some may and some may not be but that's not the point. People should stop calling people emo just because they are depressed. Anyone can be depressed.
Unlike the many different opininated definition of EMO out there the correct one is EMOTIVE hardcore.
"Emotive Hardcore" music genre began to flourish in the late 80s. The term Emo was, believe it or not, a somewhat derogatory term used to put down fans of the new wave "Emotive Hardcore" bands. But, after a huge boom from the genre over the last decade and a bit, the term has been stolen by "stupid little boys who cry and wear eyeliner". Now many teens who have never even heard of the word emotive or listened to real Emo music, claim "Emo" as their own.
So basically any so called "emo" has based there lifestyle on a farce when most dont even know what that kind of music is. It is just another stupid trend for people to be a part and excluded from. A "click" in otherswords they the "EMO kids phase" who believe themselves to be original when its obviously people just trying to fit in by following the trends like the sheep they are...Not following a trend that doesn't suit you means you are strong and aware of who you are. That's why only young teens are emo, they have no idea what's going on, or how lucky they are, they are insecure and have no self confidence, and so they fit in by not fitting in...it's a joke, but most grow out of it...
but basically its foolish to become something you don't even understand in the forst place so well done to all you emos out there well smart arent you being part of something so trivial.
Emo is in fact a shortened term for Emotive Hardcore; the genre of music. Emo is a music genre - nothing more. People say they're individual and emo, yet every teen these days is trying to be "emo"- it's not original anymore.

Emo's are a phase that teenagers are going through. As some form of expression. After all, what are they going to be some 25 year old emo? I think not.

i think emo started out as a branch of music. the point they mostly make is that their life is not worth living.
basically you could say that all "emos" have ego issues, but that'd be like teling a lie. a vast majority of what would appear to be emo are just normal people. as i said. "emo" was at first a brand of music. youtube the word and get the stereotipe, wikipedia it and get some more stereotipes and maybe some real facts.
25 year old emos? i've seen them. >>
the heirstyle's not that bad... ofcourse, it's function is to restrain your eyesight but other than that it looks good on some people.

This website should answer many of your questions.

For those who like to judge people by their looks, or choice in fashion do remember that when you point the a finger at someone else, there are several pointing back at you.
Everyone outgrows these stages in life; it's called growing up, and maturity.
You can change your look, and clothing, but it's the heart that counts.
I have had the privilege of working with, and knowing several youths labeled emo, and trust me get passed the look, and you are dealing with normal, intelligent good kids.
Non-emo mom, with a self proclaimed emo daughter of whom I am very proud, and I am a conservative Christian.

'The Point' is a subjectively personal one where the individual may really have no actual idea what 'The Point Is' ~ of the way they dress or behave, but an expression of something within and which helps them unite with others of 'their kind.'
It's nothing new ~ other than a Name or a Slogan or some form of Label that we can relate to in some tangible way.
Flappers, Beetnicks, Bobby-soxers, Teenyboppers, Teddy-boys, Mods, Rockers, Hippies, New Romantics and so on are some of the names previous generations have had planted on them or have used for identification purposes as a kind of uniform ~ even to the point of complaining about both 'uniforms' and uniformity.

When we were kids emos were known by another name - teenagers.
Look all teenagers are emotional, it's called puberty. If you say you didn't go through it, you're crazy.
