first of all, in the US, as long as you are under 3yrs and 36k miles you are covered under a federal emissions law and the dealership CANNOT legally charge for a diagnostic. your check engine light is an indicator that reads your OBD (On Board Diagnostic). Most states (like Texas) use this for emissions testing....topping off the tank wont trip the light. i will bet you the code from the diagnostic is an "Evap system leak" which means.... you didn't tighten the gas cap enough. make sure it clicks 3 times. then go get the PCM flashed (for free). i bet it wont come back on. 90% of the time on newer cars that come into my shop, this is the problem.
no, it is nothing to "worry" about except gas vapors are escaping from your fuel tank... i.e. your waisting gas and at $3 a gallon.....

,u cant force gas into something, number one .20 gallons is 20 gallons u r not going to put 20 1/8th in it...he may have not turned the fuel cap tight that will make a check engine lite to come on....and yes the light will shut off if that is what happened with the gas cap..twist it again but most gm cars will recycle this after 10 ignition turns...

a check engine light usually isn't a big deal.
it should tell you what it is in the owners manual
I drive a 2001 vw jetta and I know that the check engine light has to do with the mass airflow sensor
it could be bad gas...very simple, it's not a big or major fix
also if you want the light to go off and test to see if there actually is a problem or the light came on as a fluke try to unplug the battery for half and hour
when you turn it back on the light should be off though it might come back on after driving if the car still detects something
but try it....

I don't think topping off the tank is going to cause the engine light to go on. Is the fuel cap/door open?

No, and the topping off won't cause it. There is an engine mis-fire or other malfunction that caused the on-board diagnostics to register a code. It's probably something silly and inexpensive.
Don't worry so much.
Good luck

It may shut off on its own. You can go to Autozone and get the code reader for free. You leave a deposit and get the reader loaned to you. Hook it up to the car and find out what the problem is.

that should not make a light come on. not tightining the cap all the way would cause the light to kick on and if retightened properly will clear itself. if not you have another problem which could be a range of problems

If its the serves light just ignore it. If its the check light then something wrong and its not the gas.
