Hi
I would not take the Echinacea for the reason that the immunology of pregnancy is a complicated affair.

It is thought that Echinacea may stimulate that arm of the immune system that is associated with fighting intracellular infections.

As I recall: basically in the immune system there are two sets of helper cells: Th1 and Th2. Th1 is the helper cell for intracellular infections. Th2 is the helper cell for extracellular infections. With Echinacea, which helps the body fight intracellular infections such as influenza and the cold virus, the Th1 helper cell might be involved primarily. Thus: Echinacea may up-regulate Th1 cells. However, all this is not really proven.

An increased ratio of Th1 cells over Th2 cells has been implicated in pregnancy termination. However, Th1 signalling molecules may have some role in early implantation and at the time of delivery. Progesterone: a key hormone for supporting pregnancy is believed to increase the Th2 ratio over Th1. The phenomenon of a Th shift is known as the Th1/Th2 (cytokine) paradigm of pregnancy.

A not too scientific article to read on the Th1/Th2 balance of pregnancy:

Depending on how far pregnant you are I would talk to your Gynaecologist/Obstetrician, preferably in consultation with an Immunologist. I am not sure about stopping the Echinacea suddenly, depending on what stage you are at. You really need some expert advice on that. A Gynae/Ob with a background in Immunology is the best expert to seek.

I just found this abstract on Echinacea use in pregnancy:

I wish you well and hope you have a safe, happy and smooth pregnancy.

Best wishes.

Good question! I just started echinacea too & was wondering if I have to be careful of getting pregnant with it. There isn't a lot of data on it- but I personally would stop, just in case. But it does seem that people aren't reporting problems with it.

Best of luck! And congrats on the pregnancy!

I would talk to your doctor first. The first trimester is critical in development and there are several known allergens in echinacea.

Most warnings say do not or check. So I would call aherbalist to make sure. According to Doug Coffman at knowthecause.com, oregano (wild) kills al fungus and mold. Then you have the kyolic garlic and tumeric and resveratrol which kills most cancer*. Would not take the resveratrol as it is powerful. NOt sure about the oregano and garlic should be safe. Take care.

It should be perfectly safe to drink it in tea. Check with your doctor just to be sure, or research it on webmd.com That is a great resource for medical related questions.
