I drive a 92 Mazda Protege and tonight driving hom it was making a knocking noise. I was bone dry on oil and about 10 miles from the gas station. Once my car stopped I jumped it and it started and turned off then I added oil and it turned on.....making a louder knocking noise and then a rumbling noise I pulled off and the car felt like it was driving itself. I dont know what's wrong with it. How would I know if i blew my engine or threw a rod?

the knock, knock knocking sound is a clue that you through a rod

There's good news and bad news the good news is you didn't throw a rod or blow your engine from what your saying if you did it would have just stopped running and your oil would be all over the ground. The bad news is your car could be close to throwing a rod or the engine going. Running it without oil is the biggest screw up a lot of people do it takes 1 minute to check the dipstick and see if you need oil. You mentioned you were 10 miles from the gas station and you were running it without oil did you drive it all the way to the gas station without any oil in the engine to lubricate it. If you did I would start looking for a new car or a new engine and don't screw around it might throw a rod tomorrow or in a few months. It just depends how much damage was done to the engine it might not even throw a rod but the engine is damaged from what it sounds like. Good Luck

blowing your engine and throwing a rod is about the same thing really. If you threw a rod, you would have heard it happen trust me.

You basically just spun your rod and crank bearings from no oil. You prob wiped your cams too so your motor is junk.

Congrats, you need a complete used or reman engine. end of story

Your engine is shot! If its still running, you most likely didn't throw a rod, but spun a main bearing or probably rod bearing. The knock is most likely the piston slapping into the bottom of the head. If you drive it much longer, the engine will break itself apart. It doesn't really matter though, this engine is totally shot, not even worth rebuilding.

You just ruined all the rod and main bearings in the engine. NOT GOOD!!! Now it needs a MAJOR overhaul. Not only the bearings, but the crank, connecting rods, camshaft and it's bearings...should I go on? The engine is now a boat anchor!

The term throwing a rod is slang for a Spun bearing. When you drive with no oil in the engine this can cause a bearing to spin right out of its bearing cap. When the friction gets so great and intense on the crank this happens because of no lubrication, because you have to remember that the rod bearing comes in two halves and when one or both slip out of set then you've spun a bearing or "threw a rod".

Dont waste your time checking out that engine-its junk-oil is cheap-dont ever do that again.I hate learning things the hard way.A junkyard engine will be the least expensive way to go if you can change it yourself. If you cant,it will be easier and much less stress to cut your losses and get another car.Your 15 year old Mazda isnt worth putting that kind if money into.

As a rule, if you threw a rod, the engine would seize.

You could have spun a bearing, not to mention any other number of things that could have been damaged internally.

Get it to a shop (towed), and have them look at it, hopefully the damage is not done, but it sounds like it is.

The fact that you ran it out of oil to lubricate the reciprocating parts and hear a loud knocking is a pretty good indication. That knock is NOT someone trying to get in, it's a rod(s) trying to get out. Keep driving and you'll know for sure when you hear a loud explosion and see them hanging out the side of the engine block.

if you threw one rod even one there would be a whole in your engine

if you blew it if you mean blew the head gasket it will run but you will probably be burning coolant and oil with your fuel air

seems like ignition timing is way off
it could be the timing for the igniton because of crankshaft postion sensor or it could just be a belt slipping
