I have a grammar question:

The film presents the contrasting roles that possessions have ...

Is the word "that" necessary in the sentence, or can it be removed?

Thanks!

"that" can be removed provided that possessions is part of the main topic. I'd like to see the rest of the sentence though.

/that/ stays. It is necessary.

You could say "...contrasting roles showing that possessions. . ." clearer yet.

In this case, if you are speaking you can leave "that" out because the inflection of your voice will imply its meaning.

However, when you are writing for someone to read it is usually better to leave "that" in.

Not necessary.

You can take that out, and it makes perfect sense, that is conjunctive.
