If you have integrated graphics, it may increase its share of memory to the maximum it could handle. BUT if you have a dedicated graphics card, ALL of system RAM will be available to your applications.

No you won't lose any memory but make sure that you switch out the 512MB stick and place the 1Gb stick in that slot and then place the 512MB stick it in slot 4 to be recognized by the system. Also make sure your motherboard is dual channel or it might not recognized the 512Mb stick.

No, if you have space and the motherboard supports it you will have 1024+512 = 1536MB = 1.5GB of RAM

It depends on if you have any open slots, No open slots, yes you will lose memory. Really need more information.

No you won't and the computer should automatically recognize the change without you having to change any settings.
