It is according to the Mayan calender, they predicted the Universe would run out of days and I wouldn't put any faith in that.

The question would be more appropriate in a religious section, as it's not scientists saying it will end... it's just and end-times prophecy.
2012 is especially significant because the Mayan, Aztec, Inca, etc... calendars all place a shift around December of 2012 (December 21, to be precise). This based on their calendars... the calendars don't *end*, but they reset themselves to 0. The Mayan calendar being the most famous/infamous... it's the end of the 12th "baktun", and the beginning of the 13th, restarting a cycle and ushering in a new "era". The interesting thing is that the current started around 3114 BC, which is about the exact same time that the upper and lower Kingdoms of Egypt united, ushering in Western culture as we know it. Thus, according to the calendars, 2012 won't be the end of the world, just a shift in world culture, bringin a new era independent of the current Western-dominated culture. It's supposed to an age of "enlightenment".
So... not the "end", just the end of things as we know them.
Also, the other interesting thing is that several other end times prophecies place the "end" (or drastic change) around the same time... including the Fatima prophecies... in 1917, 3 children were visited by the Virgin Mary who told them many "secrets" as well as a warning that they'd be the last generation spared. 2 of the children died shortly thereafter, and both predicted their own death. The last just died in 2005, 7 years before 2012 (revelations is 7 years... etc...). The Catholic church still has the final part of the prophecy under wraps and hasn't shared it.
Likewise, Nostradamus predicted of new era starting shortly after the turn of this century. There's also another very old prophecy that the current Pope will be the last (ie: when he dies, the church falls and the world takes a major change), and face it, he's old. Also, according to some calculations, the world will reach 11:11 in 2012... 11:11 being a very old Judeo-Christian end-times prophecy.
So, several "major" prophecies all placing the "end" at roughly the same time. Never before has that happened... there have been lunatics declaring the end of the world since the beginning of human culture basically, but none have been as substantiated as these. Most previous ones have relied on said lunatics' "visions", and were *new* prophecies, not tied in with history and world culture for hundreds and even thousands of years (as these ones are). These are unique in that there are several of them, and many are based in actual calendars, scripture, etc... or tie in with others based on those.
Will the world end? I really doubt it. Will there be a drastic change? Probably not, but then again, given the current political climate and social tools (ie: the internet) connecting everyone and everything like never before, I wouldn't entirely doubt it. Will absolutely nothing happen? It depends on what you believe... but there's plenty of reason to think all of the prophecies are just BS.
So take everything with a grain of salt. But there's no scientific evidence (that isn't connected with religion) saying the world will end in 2012.

The strange coincidence here is that according to scientists, on 12/21/2012, the earth will orbit the sun UNDER it's axis for the first time in known history. That's a very strange coincidence. I predict an enormous flood to destroy the earth as well as catastrophic gamma ray bursts, massive earthquakes, and solar flares that burn the earth to a crisp.
Your friends at school are wrong. Poles switch every 200 to 250,000 years but it doesnt happen overnight. It takes centuries to happen.
Anyone who says the Mayans don't know jack is kidding themselves. Their calendar is the most accurate in existence.

Nobody can say that for sure, BUT.. there is a theory about it because of the mayans. They predicted some amazing events thrughtout history. Their calender ends with no explanation in the year 2012, so it is assumed that the world could end.. Take that fact and judge for yourself what you think will happen

Switching poles will be a beautiful time with lots of Aurora in the night sky, but a bad time for compasses and radio and skin cancer with partial loss of the magnetosphere.

One day the polarity of the earths magnetic field will reverse itself. It has happened in the past and it will happen again. When it does happen we will be in big trouble, but nobody knows when it will happen again. It might be happen during 2012 but I really doubt it will.
